Title: Also-ran or class leader, I can't decide
Post by: theyellowfury on October 05, 2017, 01:38:26 PM
So a very long time ago when dinosaurs ruled the earth and 4mb/s was an ok internet speed I bought Motogp3 when it was still made with love and care by THQ and not rubbish. It took me a month to get round a track without crashing but after that it became the best racing game experience of my life. It matched up nicely with my two handed Thrustmaster hotas and I could take both sides of the old Assen circuit in 6th pretty much all the way only dropping a few cogs for the tight turns at either end. Then I bought one or two more of the sequels, was impressed by the improved graphics and the continuation of the excellent physics. Terrorizing Mugello was a particular pleasure when I didn't invariably make a balls of the first turn. And then one day it was all over.
I believe Motogp'07 was the last one. I tried to get it working on numerous occasions but it very much does not like windows beyond xp. I got Superbike 09 'running' on win7 which was sometimes good if it could be persuaded to function and didn't randomly reverse my controls and/or flat out refuse to have them fixed again. It always locked up loading sessions. no idea how I happened on the solution but Alt+tabbing sorted it out. It was an insane game that required lots of ball ache for very little payoff
So tonight I found GP Bikes and played with the assy little 125 and got an inkling that it might sort out my jones.
I am an Ark fanatic. If you ask me there has never been a better game but I'm a little bored with it right now. The new DLC is coming out this month, probably. Wouldn't be the first time Studio Wildcard delayed content. In any case, in around a month my gaming time is likely booked. But back to the matter in hand.
The GP Bikes control system binds perfectly with my trusty Thrustmaster (sounds like a sex toy right? Could probably be used as one too) and the game is doing an awful lot of stuff right. I may even perfom necromancy on my paypal account and buy the full beta access. I have a couple of problems though and I'd like to know if spending money would address them. Bear in mind I've only been at the demo on that crappy 125.

The game is too hard, this is a fact. Qwop is less frustrating. Maybe its just the demo. I'd like to know if the full game is any more forgiving or if the better bikes make it any easier. I ride irl race bikes, they're a doddle and don't try to kill you if a fly hits the brake lever in a turn.

As if the near constant lowsiding wasn't annoying enough, what happens immediately after is plain bad design. I believe even mariokart has the ability and sense to put you back on the track facing the right direction following a spill. Yeah fine its more realistic but at a cost to the flow of the game.

I've done my research and know all about the complicated modding stuff. I am a huge fan of early access and don't mind working with games that need a bit of a hand. So after reading this you probably know a bit about me. If I buy this game am I going to be disappointed? Do you think it will satisfy my longing for Mugello in '07 and not drive me insane? I really hope the answer to both of these is yes.

The 125cc bike is the worst bike in the game when it comes to handling. A lot of people are creating many other bikes that have very great handling and realism. Its still not an easy game but the 125cc is much harder and also frustrating because it is just bad in many aspects. To be honest I don't know why its still in the demo version as it scares away a lot of people when in reality the modded custom bikes are much better and most of them get fixed when there are big problems. You won't be riding the 125 bike again after you buy the game...

I would say if you value a lot of importance to realism of bike handling than this game is the best motorcycle game out there. I would say buy it because I personaly have gotten so much enjoyment out of it.

One negative about this game tho, is that it is very slow in development and in my opinion will never be finished because of lack of time investment (and I don't mean to bash the creator but you can't take such big projects alone). But we can still have so much fun in Beta, if we would just get a bigger fanbase, that would help quite a bit.
So I hope to see you around more ;)

The 125 is not representative of GPbikes at all, it is buged since couple of beta release, much better with the varese and the Marusama default bike, and even more with bike and track mod, and as a plus you have WRS included in the price ! :D

long press reset to be positioned at the track edge pointing the right way after a spill, short press respawns in current location

And that's why you join the forum. Thank you gentlemen.
As regards the slow dev, spintires anyone? fucking fantastic game, physics like nothing else really. But its now community content only and the original devs kinda forgot to put in an unlock system before they bailed so it scares away those whose minds are trained to unlock things.
I have one bike and track now but you're saying I can have infinite bikes and infinite tracks?
Long press, got it, gold! ty.

Same feeling here... I don't think that I will find any motorcycle game as good as this one.

And it's cheaper than most AA games.

Yeah..and look at tracks like Outlon Park or Brands Hatch... or even Donington...they are mind blowing... Still shame that the development speed is so slow.

It's made by 3 people. This is not Activision or Ubisoft.
Here you can see exactly what has been done each day:

Yo if anyone's looking I have problems.
Long press to reset does nothing. It is VERY annoying spending most of my time getting out of gravel traps.
I downloaded a bunch of bikes but they crash the game when I touch the dropdown to select one.
Understandably I am done for the night, too stressful.

Have you downloaded the bikes and their relevent tyres?

What tracks are you using the long reset on, Some tracks don't have it properly implimented so it will jump you to a random point on the track. And how long are you holding reset for?

Mugello was the culprit. I'll just have to stay away from all those other tracks then.
No I haven't dl'd tyres but I will later when I calm down a bit. I clicked the dropdown to go to a different class and it said core.exe has stopped working and there was a button to ok it which I grudgingly pressed even though I wasn't ok with it. Sound like a problem with tyres?

Downloading the tyres is not a nicety/choice it is imperative.

It is frustrating mate. The new separate tyre files and locations takes some getting used to for all of us.  I am a little exasperated by PiB leaving it to the community to sort it out over and over rather than producing some installation instructions. Taking the piss a bit lol.

Just make sure you get the proper files setup and after that is easy to keep up to date with new tracks and bikes. There should be several topics about the file system. Should take about an hour to get the bikes and some tracks downloaded and working properly after that its pure enjoyment ;)

Also about the respawn thing, don't worry too much about it, i never reset to the track. Once you get a bit better you wont be riding out of the gravel that much ;)

Thanks dudes. I'm ok with a bit of work and I'll chance getting the tyres later.
I see vids on 'ube of lads ripping it up and looking like actual bike racers. I know I can get that good in time and I can see that the physics engine is a champ.  It would help if it was 20 past 4, that always makes me better at racing cos then I believe it more. Possibly tomorrow :)

Facing the wrong direction after a crash does get frustrating   >:(. Maybe don't worry so much about manipulating rider position, especially while turning. Start by just keeping your head down when going straight. If your expecting to be fast soon then you may be disappointed. My experience with this game is quite similar to starting iracing; difficulty and learning curve are steep. Warmed up tyres help as well.

I would recommend buying this game if you like motorcycle game. Many bikes. Many tracks. Some of the tracks I've tried so far are beautiful, such as Paul Ricard. Keep this link in mind if you buy
