Looks very interesting :o

I saw something similar to that but it got rejected as it would have taken to much of the circuit parking up (where the two pink rectangles are on the right) and was to much money i think :)
you have the authors full blessing :)

You... :P

I would download it, but it requires pro membership  :-\

Hang about I'll get the files somewhere useful...

Well if anyone wanted to convert the rFactor version just to see what it would be like on a bike... you have the authors full blessing :)

And if anyone remembers it, Snetterton went through a couple of options before the current layout was finalised...

Lol yes those nasty tarts and their silencers hehe.

Don't forget though we are old gits and Matty is only 6 (I think). He rides the modern circuit and that's what he wants to make. In thirty years time though when Croft has been made into an Oval for safety, with rubber bumpers at the edge, Matty will be reminiscing about how good the 300 was 'back in the day'.

haha good info tho Allen!  ;D

20 and a half i'll have you know :P

I can remember when it was just the 200 circuit (like the one in game), but the 300 and 100 circuit made it so much more fun to ride. Gave smaller bikes a chance to make the big boys look silly. :D

I was doing just that on a 250 against 1300 open class machines in the 80s ;)

But I ride Snetterton 300... :P

I have tried the old version on rFactor and it was pretty boring, almost like a city street circuit.

Once i've got a good understanding of how it all works, i'll give it a go :)

You want the one from the late 80s... before they f**ked Russells chicane by making it into a first gear bend (they opened it out a couple of years later).. the original Russells was a very quick left right (4th gear on a 250/350 GP machine) that Alex George compared to Eau Rouge.... (the pit entry was off the entry to the left hander with just an Armco to separate the track edge from the pit lane... so basically all you saw coming out of Coram, was an Armco ahead of you :), and the Bombhole had no run off either.. just a tyre wall and armco).. The outright lap record was held by Roger Burnett on a NSR500 (but it may have been an NS500) in 1:08 - set in 1986

If you wanted to do the older (50s-70s version) the old sears is still visible on google maps current image (as is the old Norwich straight)... You can also see where the old return straight was (still is actually) next to the concrete entrance road. It joined with the track between the Esses and Bombhole.. just before where the bridge used to be (one very scary corner). The exit of Coram used to go left onto the start finish straight (there was no right kink as far as I can tell). Oh and the hairpin at the end of the Norwich straight.. there was no run off, just a large banking that the odd bike went over the top off when it failed to stop.

Back in the 70s there were covered stands at Riches and the Bombhole.... and as those were before some tart decided racing vehicles should have silencers.. it got rather loud in them with a pack of Manx Nortons, Seeley G50s or peashooter piped TD1/TR2s.. going past

Riches, the Bombhole and the first half of Coram have all been the same since the 50s (and the Bombhole is the one part that is wrong in just about every game version ever made)

it was the only V honda one i could find with clear sound on a dyno.  :-[ most are on-board and sound awful.

I know the 'proper' sound well - had an NC30 for several years, very special little bike and really wish i had never sold it  :( I became convinced i needed a 600 supersport- i didn't it was much more fun carrying the corner speed on the 400.

A real one  ;)
..

My (old) one  ;) Oh the memories... sometimes surprised i survived them

....

Nice clean example....

I'm on my second one.. first was all original (except the paint), current one has had a couple of thousand spent on various changes (it was basically a wreak when I got it so no problem with making changes to hard to get parts!).. both 89 imports..

The easy way to avoid the issue of wanting something bigger, is to have two bikes ;)
(at one point I had both NC30s and another bike.. sold the first NC in late 2006, after 5 years and some 42K kms.. )

And on the RC30, apparently they suffer the same as the NC30, slight tendency towards understeer (Honda was very conservative with the geometry on both), jack the back up by an inch and it's much better :)

Dont know but would this be any help for grabbing engine sound? Fairly free of backgound noises and got some of that v4 character with throttle open/closed

https://www.youtube.com/v/dhxe2g0FRCQ

That's a VFR750 which has a 180 crank, the RC30 (and RC45, as well as the NC30 and NC35 400s) have a 360 throw crank and sound different (and very distinctive)..  firings intervals are for the VFRs : 90-180-270-180 degrees, and for the RC30 and RC45 : 270-90-270-90

You also need to get the nice whine from the gear driven cams

Actually it was a slightly bad description as what it does is flatten the torque curve by improving the mid range when the power valve is at it's lowest position and as the revs rise it opens the valve, thereby increasing the open time and effectively moving the torque up the revs to match. The height of the ports define where in the rev range the torque curve lies (quick and dirty tuning on old two stroke road bikes was to add a second base gasket and machine and equal amount off the head, that raises all the ports, moves the torque curve up the revs, more revs for an amount of torque = more power) so effectively you are moving the torque curve by changing the port height and so making the torque curve flatter and wider..

Right, exhaust valves were used. But they were more of a (very effective) tuning aid than valves as in a "valved engine" (where admission/expulsion are dictated by the valves).

MaX.

Consider the power valve system to be like a variable valve timing in a 4 stroke, all it does is change the outlet open period, shorter opening and lowering the top of the exhaust port = less power

The 1980 Rotax 256 was supposed to produce 50KW.. that's just 67bhp
(but then the 1980 TZ250G was only supposed to put out 55bhp)

Of course you could then change the carbs, disc valves and exhaust to completely alter the way it developed that power

Friend of mine ran a Harris Rotax in an international classic 250 series a couple of years back.. 1984 256 engine with power valve, ran 60 bhp at the rear wheel on a dyno.

How to take the really simple concept of a stepped piston 2 stroke and make it really messy and complicated.. The stepped design seperates the induction from the bottom end lubrication.

Wulf stepped engines were tried many years ago and would possibly have made it to production if they hadn't have gone with the Wankle engine for the Norton (which they got from BSA). The Wulf design is now used in a lot of drones and similar vehicles (simple light and good performance) made by Bernard Hooper Engineering (BH was Chief Engineer of Norton Villiers Ltd in the late 60s)

Would have been nice to see Elf continue (or someone continue their efforts) to see if with more R&D all the recent advances in "conventional" suspension could be matched with equal advances in alternatives..

Actually an Elf RS500 Honda would be an interesting addition to the GP-Bikes stable (rodney007 has already done the rear end of one for his NSR250.. the Pro-Arm Honda single sided system was actually licensed from Elf, for those who didn't know)

Tony's website has several extracts of his work (he's had some very interesting alternative designs over the years)

http://www.tonyfoale.com

also worth a look as one of the other alternative designs (along with TF) is Hossack - which became the BMW duolever design (there were several Hossack chassis used by single cylinder racers in the 80s)

http://www.hossack-design.co.uk

personally I'd read Tony before moving to the highly maths based stuff.. Cossalter can be heavy going.

If you want stuff about more grunt out of an engine, A Graham Bells, 2 and 4 stroke tuning books are both a good read (covers stuff about gearing, which may be useful)

and if you don't like all the tech stuff.. I'd suggest Berry on Bikes.. the blokes an idiot but seems to know how to select some nice pictures :)

Carbs irrelevant.. bah... Only purchased my first fuel injected vehicle last year, and that's got four wheels ;)

The up hill, down dale issues have been around since alpha, the 250 around lime rock was more like riding speedway up the hill (the betas have vacillated between being better up and down hill). I'm hopeful that Pibosos work on MX bikes may have given him a few answers to put back into GP-Bikes....

Max, I meant measuring slip whilst actually riding, I realise tyre manufacturers have all manner of slip measurements they can make.. I'd hate to think anyone tried to develop a tyre on just guess work and seat of the pants feel ;)
