Antivirus does not have the in quarantine, so that's excluded.

I have other .ini and .cfg around, they seem to be fine.

I'd exclude CCleaner (which I do use regularly).

Yep, me playing around with the plugin could be an option: when I debug it, I get the occasional nasty bug/crash (you know, C/C++ and pointers ...). Still, it seems quite far fetched ...

I'm re-downloading everything and using a monitoring program that warns me as soon anything is deleted from a given set of folders ... hopefully I'll find out ...

@JJS209: scary, I'll keep my eyes wide open. I don't claim to visit only very very clean sites, but when I'm on suspect ones, I'm fairly cautious (e.g. Sandboxie).
BTW, virus creators should be hanged by their genitals. After having been carefully skinned.

Have you checked recycle bin ? - bit obvious i know

Have you ever had any auto file sync type software installed ?

Anything in file type associations that might get upset when you browse the directories ?

Yes, no joy :)

Only sync-back, but I haven't used it in the last 4 months and, anyway, it was sync'ing a separate folder (not the gpbikes/bikes folder, as a precaution).

No, can't see how that would cause the issue.

Maybe it's just Microsoft trying to push people to migrate to Win10 :)

Is this any help ?

Something to do with 'group by' in explorer  - never used it myself and did not realize it had so many confusing options

No, the files were really missing: a "dir" from a command shell said so :)

MaX, as a last resort, maybe a sys restore will sort it?

Hmmm no thx, sys restore is the very very last thing I'd do.
Re-downloaded all the bikes, that was easier.

We have our AV auto delete some files from quarantine, only way to check then is to examine the logs. Normally only reserved for what are considered dangerous files and it would seem odd that a cfg or ini files would fall into this bracket but still a maybe.
