I've been debating making an attempt at modding a track, and was wondering where I'd find height data from? Is it something I'd need to pay for or is there a decent free site/location out there?
Any help on how to get started would be great.

You can also use Google Earth pro to download height data, but Google offset their data by 2 arc sec(to discourage piracy of their data), so their data is not particularly accurate for representing a real-life topographical 3D model.

Most of the USA you can get hi-res(Lidar) height data from the USGS site for free.
Unfortunately the governments of Europe and UK prefer to protect the industries that have invested money to provide a paid service to obtain this kind of data, so we don't get the same freedom of information that the USA does with data like this, even though they have accurate lidar data sets that have been paid for by the public.
However, on some of the open data sites, individuals have posted good lidar and satellite data of certain areas of Europe and UK and other parts of the world that can be downloaded for free, so it's not all bad-news. :)

I did notice on some google searches that the official .gov website seems to have height map surveys of some sort, but I'm not sure what to do with it or what format its in.

P.S. Autodesk Infraworks 2015 for converting DEMs and LIDAR to a usable format. Other programs will do it too but Infraworks is the best I've tried. It's handled every format I've thrown at it. :)
I did see that version, and I think I did see a video of it in KRP, but like you I couldn't find a link that works. As for infraworks I can't say I've heard of it I'll look into it tonight. Thanks
I did also debate using race track builder on steam. Initially I was going to try and do the entire track there, but it didn't come up that well.
The program can pull accurate (ISH) height data from Google, so I was wondering if it'd be possible toget the height data from that and export it to 3ds Max?
I'm just wondering if the scaling would be difficult for something that already has height in it?
Looks like they've changed the way the lidar data is distributed on data.gov.uk
All the individual tiles are gone, as is the old coverage map. You now have to link the dataset urls straight into GIS software.
I tried it out with ArcGIS and yeah - it all works ok.
...but unfortunately Three Sisters falls in a gap in the coverage. I've got all the lidar layers on here, both 25cm ones, the 50cm, 1m and 2m.

So you're out of luck with the free lidar. :(
Looking at the bluesky site you posted(go to the purchase options and check the previews) their lidar sets have the same gap(probably the same data) - The only one of their sets that covers it is the Photogrammetric DSM 2m, whatever that is.
I did find this other site called terrain.party which I did manage to get into blender back on my old PC. Didn't have a satellite image over it however so I couldn't see where the tracks were. Which is kinda important lol
I'll have to have a look into it as there's a few track I'd like to look into making, so its depend on what data is available
