As from the 11th Feb 2017 I will be discontinuing my role as "Administrator" of the "Track Downloads Database".
I've been thinking about this for a few months now as my time is limited and I want to devout more time and effort into the CAWS MOD Team and Bike/Track development itself as well as other projects I want to put my mind to. Also the fact that I've been doing this role for so long now and the community is evolving and changing it's outlook on how they want things done around here, so I just feel that it's time for someone else to take over the reins with fresh ideas. :)
I will leave the current MEGA based Track Database up until the 11th Feb 2017 to allow for anyone who wishes to take-over the database admin role to download any tracks they need to form their own Track Database System for the community, after which I will delete all the tracks from my MEGA account to give me the storage space I'm going to need for my other project work.
If anyone wants to take over the Track Database Admin role(Please post your intentions below so the community knows what's happening), then I'd be happy to give any advice/help they may require until they have got their own track database established. ;) 8)
Finally, as far as I'm concerned, throughout all the years this has been a team effort, so I'd especially like to thank Piboso, the Forum Moderators, and all the server admins/hosts and people that have helped and co-operated in the smooth running of the Track Database system over all these years, it's been very much appreciated. Thank you! ;) 8)
Hawk.
You did a fine Job with it Hawk. Thank you very much indeed.
Thank you Hawk for looking after the tracks all this time.
I think that when new guys join up they don't realise how much voluntary work is ongoing.
I can't help unfortunately as work often takes me away for long periods, but I hope someone will take over to keep this going.
Thank you very much Hawk. You have done a hughe job to bring us a great way to enjoy this sim without messing it all :).
Time to relax, lol
Cheers mate!
Thanks Hawk been much appreciated.
Sorry to hear that Hawk, but I understand your step. :o
You've done all the years a very well job - thank you very much. :) :)
Thank you Hawk.
Thanks Hawk, has been a long time of well organized and updated list of tracks m8, nice job indeed, really appreciate.
Time to relax and focus in whatever other things you want m8.
Thanks for the great work Hawk, it will be missed
I would jump at running it but I have more than enough to do right now sorry guys
DD
Thanks for All Hawk. I would gladly undertook this but i use shitty 3g internet with mb limits:(
Many thanks, Hawk. I'd do it, but I don't have enough bandwidth, haha.
Thanks for your work! If only I had the upload space...
Thank you for all thw work! You have done a masive job!
Unfortunately i can't take over either, don't even have enough sparetime to do all the stuff i would want for GPb.
Thank you hawk
Yes! Thanks for your tireless dedication to doing this job, Hawky, very much appreciated, and I am slightly nervous that we wont find such a worthy replacement for the job. :(
Glad to hear you will be concentrating on bringing the community more content mate!
We hope you...

I cannot take over the job as I am not Awesome enough ;)
As it is important that we have a track data base I will step forward and do it. I will need to know how big a server is needed and also how I can setup the GPBOC PC to maybe used for this and other file storage and access point for GPB members as well.
I am new to this server stuff and dont know exactly WTF I am doing.
Naturally Hawky you will have to teach me everything as I am an old fart and am not up on all this forum to server linking and whatchamacallit bumfluff that goes with it
I spend hours on the forum each day so it will not really add much more to my daily workload and it is something that we really need.
If you can get on skype to chat Hawky it would be a big help. My skype name is allan.beaton63 If anyone else needs to contact me for any reason feel free to call.
DD
Well we all know you are Awesome enough buddy!
Thank you, deeply. :)
Thanks Hawk that was a very great job on database, and for sure Thanks too for DD!

Thx for your work Hawk.
All you have to do is have enough upload space and add the new tracks?

mega.nz = 50GB space for free.
You do need a decent upload speed though.

I know, my free account is already filled to the brim :P 50GB is not nearly enough for all the tracks.
Maybe a bittorrent system is a good idea?
He is asking how to do it holding the tracks directly on his server not using any 3rd party host.
Something like Syncback?

If you have your own server, space is surely not an issue.

All GPB trakcs on Hawk's mega.nz account are less than 15GB (and it could be much less if we weren't forced to have DS and NDS versions of each track).
If somebody wants to pick up this role, I'd strongly suggest to provide each track as a single .pkz file: much easier to handle for both the admin and the users.
I'd even put the track version number straight in the file name (e.g. Monza_v1.5.pkz). Notice this means the name is also used in/for the various track files (e.g. .ini).
Bittorrent ? No thanks, nobody will seed.
Ideally either mega.nz or (marginally better) an FTP site so one can use SyncBack. Notice that mega.nz also provide a sync tool (not tested).

Exactly! He asks how it can be shared from his server! Space was never an issue Lol. ::)
Edit: OK he did ask "how big his server needs to be" as one of the questions. Apologies. I assumed there would be enough as he is unlikely to have less than 120Gb hard drive and GPBikes uses, what, 300Mb, OS; 10Gb and a few streaming softwares. But the real issue is the best way to share from it.
I don't think he has his own server, he said "my free account is already filled to the brim".
Lol maybe we are crossed here ;D
The GPBOC server is his server that hosts all the GPBOC dedicated servers on. We are talking DD here not Boerenlater aren't we?

We better stay out of this before everyone gets confused lol.
I have offered to do it no Borenlater you doughnuts lol
I want to know how to use the GPBOC server system to do this or need to get an online server with enough space and not cacky Dripbox lol

Doh ! Right !
@DD: you don't need to host the files on your home hardware, you just need to upload them somewhere where they are accessible by everybody (mega or an ftp server).
But it is an interesting way to do it as he has a big fat server sat there just for GPB that is practically empty. Plus he will already have track folders full of tracks for each server. Would be nice if one of those was actually the database we all use?
It has a risk of course - a HDD crash which if not backed up as well as a 3rd party provider, could be nasty.
So for simplicity something like Mega, but for sexiness, a database on his "made for GPB" server?
+ I think SIMPLICITY must be the key.
User clicks track link and downloads track
None of this "download BiTTorrent, set it up to these settings blah blah blah etc" : Too difficult or exasperating for most .
Simple Simple Simple.
I have a new MEGA server with 50GB free just for this plus I will have 2 backups on the GPB server system and he new z270 system
DD
No torrents and direct download is best anyways

No. In general, you don't use a normal PC as file server (unless the traffic is really limited).
Also, bandwidth-wise you're better off uploading somewhere and let them handle the download traffic: when you host yourself, that traffic hits your PC and fiber line ...
I really see no advantage for him/us if he hosts locally vs he uploads somewhere (unless he has a real file server and a dedicated line).
So you are going Mega after all that? Lol!
Hmm 50Gb, you might have to put hand in pocket again. Hmm a disadvantage.

He creates another mega account (likely, a new mail address is all you need) for another free 50GB of space :)
Oh LOL 8) Naughty.
if its possible to keep the current Mega track database going.. i can't take it on (i would fuck it all up) but i will pay for it...
used the same email address as other mega account
I dont want to eat into my internet bandwidth for the servers for GPB
Dont worry I got it coveredone way or another just need help making it all work as best as possible for you guys
