Is there a way to make the pictures attached to a post public so guests can see them?
Upload to http://imgur.com/ and use the forum code.

I don't think so, everytime I look at a post that I know has pictures while I am not logged in I don't see them.
I wanted to avoid having to post pictures to another website. Do you need to register for imgur?

I was able to see pictures in the GPB thread also, but the one I was able to click on looked like it was externally hosted.

No, but I guess that is because you have attached those via the forum post system? Try using online pic storage like "Flickr" and you will have no problem. ;) :)
