I'm the first to be disappointed by the amount of spam.
It's not so easy to fight it, though. I don't know how other forums handle it.
In my opinion the forum didn't die because of spam, though. I think everyone simply moved to Discord.

Discor will never be as practical as a forum, it just a nightmare to search for something specific since it hasn't a dedicated thread of each subject ! i really didn't understand that hype for discord !

For general discussion Discord is perfect. Keeps small talk off of the forum
Tutorial and permanent information should be posted on the forum but half the users aren't even know it exists.
This is were a Wiki or similar would be best as it can be officially updated and act as a perment reccord (not buried under 100s of replies)

I have no experience with forum administration but i was curious what methods can be used to prevent forum spam and besides captcha, email confirmation i found about mods like STOP FORUM SPAM (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=4311), if you don't already use it.
I moderate a motorcycling forum and we got frustrated with spam to the point now that every first post from a new user needs to be approved by a mod before it gets seen by the community. This way we have no spam on the forum at all.

@Piboso: At least try something instead of simply relying on admins to police and delete bots & spam on the forum... there are a multitude of solutions out there.
