Title: New pc ideas
Post by: Donnie on November 21, 2016, 04:22:10 PM
Hi guys.  I'm looking for a bit of advice. I've been playing the game for years on my laptop with very poor graphics. It just gets buy. I'm considering upgrading to a gaming pc.

I don't have a massive budget but I don't really know where to start. I see loads online but I don't know the difference between hardware etc. Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Is the pc to be just for GPBikes or other games too?

I am just waiting for my pci adapter for my laptop.

It plugs into the wifi mini pci slot on the laptop and you can then plug in ANY normal Graphics card.

You can run it with a simple power source like a laptop PSU or use a real PSU

I got it for £30 no power adapter, got a new EVGA 450Watt 80 plus bronze PSU for £29.99 and a Gigabyte GTX1050 Ti 4GB for £139.99  Thats 200 quid and should play all games at 1080p FPS!!!

Unboxing video here: https://www.youtube.com/v/O50ExvK8p38

Should have the adapter this week and will report how it is

Just an idea.

Oh and I ave been looking at system stuff and the old Skylake G4400 is only £55!!! and overclocks to 4.6 GB on a Z170................just sayin

Step #1: decide your budget.

+1 Good advice

I think rFactor2 will be what you're building for,  the game's getting DX11 sometime soon and I suspect will require more power than GPB to run well.

+1 on 1050 Ti - Just installled this card in my mini PC gaming setup (i5) and i get double the frame rate of my old 750Ti in GPB  :)

You will need a decent proccessor to stop it bottle-necking the graphics card though

Thanks for the tips all.

I'm looking to spend less than £500.  Is there much difference between i3 and i5 processors?  I don't need and peripherals just the pc itself which helps.

spend some time on youtube and watch pro comparisons on cpu's you can learn a lot and save a lot too.

g4400 Pentium is half the price of an i3 and can be overclocked, you can save to start with and update later when u can afford to

for 500 u can build a good system if u use a gtx1050 ti

If you are really on a tight budget I'd consider buying a previous gen GPU: you can probably find some GTX 970 for silly prices (even more if second hand).

I agree with Max. With my 970GTX Im playing even GTA V fullHD on High settings (online with actions) or Ultra for offline.

The one great thing with the 1050 series is they only draw 75 watts so you can save money by not needing extra power on a and also electricity t lol
And you can throw it in an old PC without worry about a 6/8 pin connector (OLD PC meaning not new, not old like me)

One thing I definitely advise against is to save money on your PSU. Just get a good 500-650W and call it "well spent money".
You can go with less, but the difference in price is marginal and you never know ...

I dont mean save buy getting a chep one Max, I mean you can get one with 100 watts plus less as you dont need it for the 1050.

I ONLY buy EVGA 80Plus PSU, as I got the 1050 I got a 450watt for only 30 squid!!! normally 40 and if you go up to 600 watt even more, so I saved a lot because of the 1050 but still got a very high quality PSU

In the end 20 here and 20 there adds up m8

You saved a lot between 450W and 600W ? I'd say 20-30GBP ?

Anyway, a 970 is in a different class of GPU power compared to a 1050ti so yes, it will need more W.
But the real comparison should be a 1060 or a 1070, and they are not @75W.

Money no issue, go for the newer cards, of course.

Why buy an old one when the 1050 is cheap enough and give you the latest chipset and is guaranteed.

DD

EDIT: I am thinking
ASUS Z170-E  £135
16GB 3000MHz Ram £95
Corsair CPU Watercooler £50
EVGA 450 80 PLus Bronze £30
Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti £140
Intel Pentium G4400 (Overclocks to 4.6GHz) Tested strong against i3 and i5!!! £55

THATS £505 with no HD or case

So call it 600 thats 100 more than planned and the thing will run 1080 high in most modern games ultra in some too.

The G4400 is to start with, the guy can save to upgrade that and all else will not need upgading!!!

Because a 970 will give you much better performance than a 1050ti.

So if you're on a budget and are OK to buy a second hand one, it's an excellent deal.
All the chaps that have bought the new 1060/1070 cards are selling the 970 for pocket money.

I agree Hornet. If you don't mind buying a 2nd hand card, then a 970 or even a 980 if you have extra cash is a better buy than a 1050/ti.

ORRR....

GET A GTX1080 and be happy forever :D.

What part of he wants to spend around £500 did you not get and buying either of those means needing to spend an extra 20 to 30 for a good PSU to power them, 30 gets ad drive at least!!! And used dont carry warranties which is worth having as you never know with used electronics. I said 16GB Ram as it stops bottle necking in modern games but he can get away with 8 easy, that gives dosh for a case.

Was just a little troll DD :). He could easily get away with 8Gb yea. 8GB RAM will DEF not be bottlenecking anything. Thats for sure. I agree on warranties on electronics, as I also really prefer to have it, but electronics can last for a very long time with no issues what so ever. If I had a budget, and needed to choose between a GTX 970 and GTX 1050/ti, I would most certainly try get a GTX 970. The 450w power supply you listed will also be more than enough.

On the other side, if he is just going to be playing mostly GPBikes/rFactor then I would go for the newer GTX 1050. But for me, who plays everything, I would go for a beefier "older" card.

8GB RAM is starting to prove a bottleneck for modern games though. But as long as he starts with a good motherboard all that goes on it can be changed easy. The Z170 chipset is the best for OC and offers all modern yummy stuff, m.2, USB 3.1 etc etc THis means it will last a while for the guy.

In SOME games only though. Very little games are starting to benefit from 16Gb Ram. But 8GB RAM at first, and later another 8GB is very viable.

But yea, start with a good base. I always believe in getting good motherboard/cpu and ram because if you get good stuff, it will outlast the other components by far.

I recently upgraded my pc, and my previous PC went through about 3 High End GPU's with the same CPU/Mobo/Ram. I gave my old pc to the GF and is still running strong.

DD, as someone with a 2 year old gaming laptop and not a lot of free cash, I'm interested to know how you got on with the adapter? :)

I will be doing a full tech review and how to when I get it. It cost 30p to get 7-10 day shipping from China lol. Should be at the end of the week by luck

DD

You need a mini PCI slot (wifi card) or an expresscard port to use the adapter: http://www.gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229101.html?wid=21 (http://www.gearbest.com/laptop-accessories/pp_229101.html?wid=21)

Hmmm ... are you sure this gives you x16 PCI lanes (or at least x8) ? Because if it's not the case ...
