Title: State of the Union ( GPB beta16 and beyond )
Post by: PiBoSo on July 01, 2019, 04:49:30 PM
Someone asked to know the future plans for GP Bikes.

At the moment the focus is on MX Bikes, that should be released this week.
After that, the plan is to update the modding tools.
I haven't forgotten World Racing Series. The new and better suspensions simulation code will be completed as soon as possible.

The long-term goal is to release all projects on Steam, hopefully within this year.

The main tasks for GP Bikes ( not all for Beta16 ) are:
- new stock tracks
- new stock bikes
- dangling leg animation
- fix of the rear suspension simulation
- improved ECU simulation
- wings simulation
- support for penalty surfaces ( that are sadly becoming a necessity because tracks are more and more replacing runoff areas with asphalt  :'(  )

The tasks shared between all the projects are:
- night lighting
- loading times optimization
- tool to make it easier to install mods

Many, many more fixes and improvements are planned, too many to list ( and some will be a surprise :P ).

After initial excitement connected with MotoGP19 release I can say now that GP Bikes have no competition...
Only GP bikes can provide a serious entertain for me...so keep working PiBoSo. I keep fingers crossed for further development.

Quote- support for penalty surfaces ( that are sadly becoming a necessity because tracks are more and more replacing runoff areas with asphalt    )
Yes, runoff areas are a big problem. Overtaking manoeuvres from some drivers in run off areas without any guilt feeling killed my motivation to drive GPB.
Maybe because Grand Prix Legends is "playing" in the seventieth (on tracks without run off areas) 20 years after its release there are still exist some leagues.

A quick recap and update on development plans.

After the original post, there were:
- an MXB update and several patches in July
- a KRP update in August
- Beta16 of GPB was finally released last month. Unfortunately it didn't have all the planned improvements

Then, at the beginning of this month, a new MXB build was released. It was an important one, because it was the first on Steam:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/655500/MX_Bikes/

Sadly it wasn't possible to immediately go back to the other projects, as there are a few important bugs and issues that need fixing.
An update is scheduled for the next few days.

After that, hopefully there will no more major problems and the plan is to update the modding tools and complete work on the car physics, that has been in development on and off for the past months, to finally release a long overdue new WRS build.

At the moment GP Bikes is in line immediately after WRS.

It would then be nice to prepare something for KRP and MXB in time for the Steam Winter Sale, but time is quickly running out  :'(

I bought MX Bikes again on steam. I really like it and hope that your hard work will be rewarded with good sales rate.

As for GP Bikes I really hope for revised off track grip in next build :-) and maybe post processing.

Time for a long overdue update.

Unfortunately development didn't go as planned in the message at end of October.
The MX Bikes update released shortly after didn't solve the worst multiplayer bugs.
Therefore, most of November had to be spent on two patches and to update the modding tools.
MX Bikes is doing much better than expected.
Pros:
- the funds it is generating will allow all the projects to continue for a long time
- the high number of users allows to stress, debug and improve multiplayer ( that benefits all simulators )
Con:
- the flip side is that the constant influx of new users requires a lot of attention, stealing time from the other projects

Nonetheless, a KRP update is now in development. The goal was to release it before the holidays, but it wasn't ready in time, sadly.
It will be published in a few days.

After that, it will be finally possible to go back to WRS and GPB.
In the meantime, the new track has been completed. A video will be published as soon as possible.

I know everyone on here will either think or reply with comments like 'GIT GUD n00b' etc , but could there please be _some_ stability control? Losing my mind at how the bike just keeps tipping over, under-siding, tank slapping etc, all the time.
I'm not even trying to set records, just trying to get any bike around any track at 50% speed, yet the bike keeps falling on turn-in, braking etc.
I'm using a PS4 pad.

Sounds like your using a bike that isn't tuned properly in the physics department? We had a lot of this kind of issue a few betas ago and where able to tune it out in the bikes development, but it's really hard to say if it's a core physics issue or a bikeMOD dev issue cause it seems to crop back in through different beta versions for some reasons..... It could just be that the bikeMOD needs updating for this beta version of GPBikes or it could be something Piboso has wrong in the core physics somewhere? Either way it is a difficult thing to tune out of a bikeMOD in testing and you really need to know what your doing to achieve it without compromising the physics of the bike in sim.
We think it has more to do with the virtual riders reaction in that the V-rider appears to whip the bar-torque too harshly just for a fraction of a second(while leaned over) during certain controller settings which causes the front end to slide away?
Title: Re: State of the Union ( GPB beta16 and beyond )
Post by: Gregz0r on March 03, 2020, 12:46:37 PM
It's not only losing the front at slow speeds, it's also the crazy wobbles under even moderate throttle, where I have to get off the throttle completely, or the bike goes into ever increasing wobbles, until it throws me off the bike.
I would love to know how to reduce these, or if the user can do something with tricks in a base setup.
When it feels right, it feels GREAT - even at the slow speeds I was going, but it's also so frustrating.

Title: Re: State of the Union ( GPB beta16 and beyond )
Post by: Hawk on March 03, 2020, 11:31:55 PM
Thanks for the video Gregz0r..... Yes I can see some issues just from looking at it....

From what I can see in the video I would say that the bike has what we used to call in the CAWS-Team "Wobble 30" issues(Major wobbles when changing direction). Off the top of my head I would personally say this is very likely to be a virtual rider settings issue or could be a "Centre of Gravity" issue or a combination of both, even down to the frame flex settings?

Not sure if your using the rear brake too hard or if that's engine braking that I see as your downshifting under braking into corners? If it's engine brake then the engine-brake and probably likely the engine inertia is set far too heavy for a 2-stroke engine.

Who's BikeMOD is that?

Got the bike from that massive MEGA GP Bikes mod directory. The issues are with every bike though, even when I try to be ultra-smooth with my controller triggers.
Chronic understeer, and insane wobbles and general instability.

DId not look too bad but try and avoid dropping so many gears and carry your speed through the turns to keep the bike more settled - first is really only for slow hairpins.

My first impressions of the suspemsion are:
Front spring rate about right but lacking damping, all moving too freely.  Increase both comp and rebound damping.
Rear too firm - reduce spring rate until bike starts squatting a little on the gas.  Can't really tell anything about rear damping until it's moving.

First thing I tend to try for reducing headshake is to increase the fork offset a bit.  If that's not enough then increasing the rake is next on the list.

Good luck. :)

For a pre b17 mod it might be worth using debug mode to check the suspension, ride height, pre-load and tyre temps are still in/or can be adjusted to the recommended range.

Hello everyone!
Last time this thread was updated, at the end of last December, it would have been very difficult to predict the current state of the world.

In the meantime, KRP and GPB updates have been released.

At the moment a long overdue new build of MXB is in progress and should be ready in a few days.

After that, it will be mandatory to update GPB as soon as possible because:
1) the code changes that were supposed to improve the rear suspension simulation actually broke it. It was right in Beta16 and the code has been reverted to the correct one
2) the slipper clutch simulation is still bugged
3) the encryption code for modders implemented in KRP and GPB needs some fixing and improvements ( already integrated )

An update of KRP is also needed urgently.
With almost all the kart races stopped all around the globe, karters are flocking to KRP for training.

Last but not least, a forum software update is needed, because the registration captcha stopped working.
It will be done as soon as there will be some free time.

P.S.
What can we expect before the next thread update? Zombie apocalypse?

There still are big plans for WRS.
Unfortunately it never received much, if any, attention. Therefore, at the moment it must take a step back in development because there is a lot of pressure coming from the MX Bikes and KRP communities, that keep growing very quickly.

The MX Bikes update has been released a few days ago.
Unfortunately there are several bugs and issues that need addressing as soon as possible via a patch.

Also, sadly GP Bikes must take a brief step back because at the moment there is a lot of pressure to fix some Kart Racing Pro issues for championships starting soon.

Apologies for the wait.
Title: Re: State of the Union ( GPB beta16 and beyond )
Post by: PiBoSo on July 15, 2020, 10:15:15 PM
Since the latest post, a long train of updates has been released for Kart Racing Pro (5), MX Bikes (4) and GP Bikes (3), including the infamous Beta18c, that seems to have introduced a bug in the physics simulation.
The issue will be investigated as soon as possible.

However lately, as some may have noticed from the daily development log, the focus has been mostly on WRS.
Many think that WRS should be dropped altogether, because it cannot compete against the juggernauts on the simracing market.
They are right, WRS has no chance on the market, but I cannot let it go. Therefore the plan is to release an update as soon as possible.
The issues with the new suspensions code have been finally fixed, after much investigation and debugging. The new simulation is a big step forward, especially for dirt cars.

After the new WRS release, work will resume on GPB and MXB.
For GPB, the plan is to release an update that:
- fixes the latest physics issues
- introduces the much requested possibility to set the steer damper in the garage
- improves support for rider animations modding, that seems to be a hot topic recently
Title: Re: State of the Union ( GPB beta16 and beyond )
Post by: h106frp on July 15, 2020, 11:31:25 PM
A CarED would go a long way to generally improving the appeal of mods for WRS - I started a sidecar mod (using the invisible 4th wheel) but trying to figure out the GEOM was just a showstopper as its even more complex than GPB to sort out.

Don't waste your time investigating the tankslapper problem, just revert the virtual rider code back to 18b, it was perfect.
Instead you should focus on solving the slipper clutch problem which makes the engine brake not work properly at high lean angles.

One more very simple thing: Please add alpha channel (transparency) support for rider skins so that we can hide parts of the rider model that collide/clip with the 1P view in VR/headtracking.

Unfortunately it's not so easy.
So far investigation on the virtual rider changes has been inconclusive, with no difference between the Beta18b and Beta18c behaviour.

Maybe an intermediate ( bugged ) version of the code has been released by mistake?  :-\

Sorry for the lack of updates.
Lately development has lost direction.

The original plan was to fully concentrate on a long overdue WRS update but, despite the very positive improvements, progress slowed down considerably during the past couple weeks.
In the meantime some problems with KRP have been reported, so work on a patch started.
As time went by, there was also the necessity to start work on a new build of MXB.

Most of the fixes and improvements are shared between the projects, but jumping from one to the other is not optimal because it's easy to lose focus and momentum.
Anyway, trying to get back on track now.
The plan is now to first release the KRP update, that should be ready very soon and provide feedback on several improvements and changes.
Then hopefully WRS, MXB and GPB development will regain pace.

After a lot of 18b laps my first impression of 18c was significant understeer, trying to fix it just lead to excessive lean angles and all the problems that creates with any form of camber. Personally, my first thought was tyre profile issues.

Updates for all the other projects are planned shortly as well. Important improvements are planned, especially for multiplayer, but also physics.

However, I have to be away from office at least for one week.
Therefore unfortunately not much progress will be done in the coming days.
Work will resume at full power in September, hopefully.

Work on the projects resumed on the 7th of September.

At the moment the focus is mostly on MX Bikes, to try to have a new build ready in time for the first anniversary on Steam.
After that, the plan is to update GP Bikes and Kart Racing Pro as soon as possible.

World Racing Series sadly is still facing problems. The double wishbones suspensions simulation causes bump steer during acceleration and this issue halted the data tuning needed because of the new suspensions physics.
Unfortunately It's very difficult to find time to dedicate to WRS when there are three growing communities demanding ( and rightly so ) constant updates for GPB, KRP and MXB. Apologies. Work on WRS will resume as soon as possible. The only positive aspect is that much of the work done for the other projects ( multiplayer, rendering, user interface improvements ) is directly beneficial to WRS, too.

Last week, on the 26th of October, Beta15 of MX Bikes has been released.
Unfortunately closing the build took much longer than expected because of the many changes that had to be tested and finalized.
On the plus side, several of those fixes and improvements will be quickly ported to the other projects.

During the past days the focus has been on documenting the ( many ) changes, fixing the reported bugs and supporting the community. MX Bikes is growing at an unbelievable rate. Good news, but it also means that there is a lot of pressure and it's difficult to find time for the other projects.

Nonetheless, development on GP Bikes and Kart Racing ( and hopefully WRS ) will resume this week, with the plan to release updates later this month.
Lately some work on the GP Bikes Steam page has been done.

Unfortunately, the GP Bikes beta19 and KRP release12 updates took one month longer than expected to be ready.

After the latest KRP build release, development in general slowed down considerably. Nonetheless, track tools have been updated as well, a few days ago.

At the moment the plan is to do general code maintenance and then release a patch for GP Bikes.

After that, hopefully work can resume on WRS to iron-out the issues and prepare a long overdue update.

A GP Bikes patch has been released in early February. Unfortunately it didn't fix all the bugs it was supposed to.

Later the focus shifted on WRS and the modding tools. The plan was to release a long overdue WRS update, but sadly, while big progress has been made on it, the allocated time run out and development had to shift back to GPB and MXB.
It is heartbreaking to not be able to give WRS the attention it needs.

Nonetheless, the improvements made for the car physics translated well to bikes and karts, too.
The change is most notable in GPB, where bikes are much more stable, especially in low-speed corners.

For some time development of GPB and MXB progressed side by side, with the goal to release the first on Steam as soon as possible, considering the many requests received.

However, a few weeks ago focus shifted on MXB only, because it was last updated too long ago and because it's difficult to ignore that it's selling more in one month than GPB in over 12 years. It would have been nice to release GPB on Steam on the anniversary of the first alpha release, but sadly it will not happen.

The latest turn of events is that the planned MXB tasks have been cut short to quickly release an update ( even if very distant to what was meant to be ) and then take a break, with the goal to hopefully return soon with faster and more consistent overall development pace.

One thing I don't understand is why MXB selling more means it has higher priority for updates? Seems backwards to me from your perspective.
Surely, getting GPB on Steam would increase the overall money you make more than fixing a few things here and there in MXB.
Or is there some clause with Steam that forces you to release updates regularily?

There is no rule that the higher selling project must be updated first, and no Steam clause.
In general the plan is to try to keep all three main projects in a loop, trying to sneak a WRS update when possible.

GP Bikes latest main update has been on the 25th of December, while MX Bikes latest one has been on the 26th of October, so an update is long overdue anyway and the original plan was actually to prioritize GPB.
Kart Racing Pro has been updated on the 10th of January, so it's last in line.

The problem is not really the order of the updates, but how slow they have been recently.
Unfortunately during the past few months there have been issues, that are not related to development but impacted it.

As briefly mentioned in the previous post, during the past 7 months there have been issues that have slowed down development considerably ( and caused the drop of the daily updates ).

They got much worse during the latest month, and this is why there will be no GPB update on the 30th as someone speculated, and why the planned MXB patches haven't been released.

Trying to fix the problems, but it's not easy.

I've been playing since 2014, and if I can wait that long to get here, the Beta 19, I can definitely wait for Beta 20 and future releases.

Even reading the development daily updates already makes me happy, satisfied, and even glad to know that you are in fact always working on this. Plus, we know you're working not only on one project, so the fact that you can always keep them on track simultaneously is a huge respect. Looking forward to any news as Mimo said ;D
