Title: 3D Models: Is this viable?
Post by: Myst1cPrun3 on July 03, 2019, 08:15:22 PM
Little curious, found a nice site that has a tonne of downloadable 3d engines. Wondering if its viable to use one from here in a bike or not?

(To put it into context I think there's every CBR 600 engine from about 1995 LOL)

Here's the site for anyone interested:

Short awnser- yes

Short version of the long awnser- Not nessecerily worth it.

The amount of time potentially fixing a model might not be worth it. However, for a first project then yes these could be good starting point for a new modder. Assuming these are royalty and licence free models (I know they are free to download but may need some commercial aspect when used for anything but personal use)

Hm.

I've been (Un-successfully) trying to get into modding for a bit, and after some rather hilarious attempts at converting a track, (Castle Combe definitely isn't 1 metre long LOL)
I started to look into bikes, and thought the engine would be a good place to start. The plan was to find a 3d model of an engine, then one of a frame, fairing, suspension, wheels etc, and then 'build' the bike.
I don't really know were to start other than that though.

Firtsly download a 3D software , then you have to learn it first , as you only want to model , it would be quite fast , topology is the key , and also optimise the number of triangle.
Then you'll have to learn a bit the UV unwrap and it would be done

Most of peoples use AUTODESK 3DS MAX that you can get for free if you're an etudiant https://www.autodesk.fr/education/free-educational-software (https://www.autodesk.fr/education/free-educational-software)

There is also Blender that is a free software

I personnaly use Cinema 4D because it's easy to handle , and there are plenty of peoples using it so a lot of documentation but it's not free at all.

One of the hard thing you'll face trying to modeling a bike is to find great references images (full front, full back ,full both side).

Don't give up that fast , modeling is a long work , take your time

Reference images arent an issue, I can easily find loads of what I was debating doing, and I have 3DS Max 2010, and blender installed.
As for giving up quick, I've been looking into it for about 2 years now, and I've still got nowhere. My brain doesn't have the capacity for it xD and I don't have the patience.

Here imo the best YT channel about 3d modelling: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSLLdTBwLMfTKWS56tOiQpw/videos

Don't worry. It takes time to learn, and like you, it took me a good few years of on-off tinkering until I got my head around how it works.

Like BH has pointed out, watch tutorial videos. And start with something a lot simpler than an engine. Don't even start with motorcycle parts. Take a basic object on your desk and try to recreate it in 3DS or whatever you decide to use.

The first bike i "made" was a bodge together of parts like you have linked to. I used the swingarm, engine, forks, wheel and fairings model from random bikes from online and a chassis that I made. It looked like a dog and I couldn't actually get it to work in the game because the Polygon count was so high GPB couldn't handle it :P

Start small but think big, you'll get there ;D

Edit- THIS (https://youtu.be/vk6lj_xNraY) is a nice basic tutorial on modeling. He explains his button presses and workflow which is important for beginners.
