I can't speak for the GPB or WRS side of things, but I feel as if the KRP side of things has come out of control a couple times in the past. Especially with content theft on content that was paid for, we saw rampant theft of models, files, and other data. It was difficult to deal with - see this thread (post #71). You can see that one of my mods was repackaged, renamed, and blatantly stolen. Aside from other community issues within that discussion, we saw some of the worst community involvement in this - namely that the members who had stolen were not reprimanded in the slightest. This had been an issue leading into that discussion and had been a major issue.

This brings me to the encryption tool. We have been looking for an anti-theft device for our mods for the last few years because of the issues we've had with people taking our content and releasing it as their own. This has happened with tracks, engines, tires, and paints for helmets and karts. We're part of a small community and content theft is something that pushes away serious modders. We have rallied behind an encryption tool because we feel as if our mods are high quality. See this example, and browse through the forum for other posts by Cory or Ian.

The encryption tool would allow us to prevent the modifying and distribution of our content. Especially on paid projects, it's insulting that people will buy it and try to 'crack' it. I understand there are many people who don't like us asking money for our work, and I know there are many who will tell us 'thats the way it is' when it comes to content theft. I view it as an issue, and we want to make it clear that we will not stand for it.

Mystic brings up so many good points, as do many of the posters in this thread. With the exception of blackheart, I feel like people have been at least somewhat constructive. However, I can see things aren't turning for the better. Hopefully this sorts itself out, and hopefully everyone can calm down a little bit. If anything, this post aims to serve as a secondary perspective for some of you who don't know about the blatant stealing that has gone on in the past. This is why some people are so adamant about anti-theft devices.

I don't want to see this community in shambles because of egos and disagreement. At the end of the day, we're all motorsport enthusiasts, and we can put aside our differences to have a little fun in our simulators.

Hi Hawk. On the KRP side of things, we have been thinking about this for quite some time. We were more interested in being able to secure content once its released - by locking a GUID to a mod that has been purchased. That way people couldn't steal paid content. That being said, your idea is excellent as well. Hopefully we will have a better modding community because of the encryption tool!

It is Nvidia iRay for 3ds Max. Hopefully the result in game will look close to that (I know how to do shaders and mapping for PiBoSo's rendering engine).

Yikes... I got the warning that the topic hadn't been posted in for 120 days. Sorry about the radio silence.

There have been some visitors to the track lately, along with some more detail to the track.

I missed those buildings pics Corrie, very very nice looking m8  8)
Thanks, Warlock! Rendered with nvidia iRay, but I'm confident it'll look great in game with graphics all the way up.

A bit of an update: got some stuff done with the Drag Strip.

Both are fantasty tracks (the original layout was not created by me) Just a fun little project!

Similarly for KRP: there are online competitions with mod karts that are not given to the ones not in the competition (no money involved though as far as I know).
What happened: some smart ass managed to get the "private content" (mod kart) and then shitstorm came on the forum.
I'd just like to clarify what happened. Those specific members who had gotten "private content" were removed from the series because they couldn't handle racing maturely. That is why the league went to an invite-only state. Unfortunately, that same group of people took .edf files (engine models made by me) and reposted them on the same forum as their own creation. That is why there was a shitstorm. People weren't being held accountable for not giving credit.

Encryption will not solve it - people will use model extraction software if they want it bad enough, but if anything, we should be giving unlimited access to the 3d files, not limiting access. With such small audiences, the communities would benefit (on the modding side) by having files completely open so examples are easier to show. For example, the GPB community makes their 3ds models available. That is FANTASTIC, and I wish that KRP's modders would do the same. On the same side of it, there has never once been a new kart mod for KRP. The reason for it is because very few people understand all the aspects of linking parts in 3ds max - as in, naming conventions and such were and still are very vague. If we had access to a base model (@PiBoSo) more people would be inclined to put their completely finished models into the sim.

A bit of a rant, but I think that the short solution is to become more strict on enforcing content theft... not encrypting files. But in the long term, ease of accessibility will build communities that learn from each other, not hiding 3d models from curious eyes.

These photos are an update on it all. It's progressed much more than the photos show - they are just elevation profiles (250% z-axis scale) and to show the main pit building.

The main pit building/garages

Elevation profile of car/bike track

Elevation profile of kart track

More updates to come.

NDS = No Dynamic Surface? Sorry for not knowing, but what's the problem with dynamic surfaces in GPB? I am going to put out two versions - with saw-toothed kerbs and one with all flat kerbs. It's not a pain if I add them in from the start, so might as well put in the effort. Not many people like fantasy tracks in KRP, so I don't think many of the GPB/WRS community will like them, just the trend that seems to be happening. Any trackmaking rules I need to look for (aside from the basics) to integrate the track into GPB?

I think that's true - height is probably the biggest difference with those types of kerbs. I'll test around with it! I'm terrible driving in GPB, so things are probably going to be more on the cautious side.

Did that for a few KRP tracks - thanks for the advice!

Ok  ;) Thanks for the advice. Might put a transparent layer over the outside kerbs - it keeps the looks, with a flat plane on top - I'll give Mugello a try

What about outside? In KRP, we had a track where the far left kerb was used for the exit - it worked well as an exit kerb. Will that type of design (only used on the outside) work? or is it too disruptive to the handling?

General Discussion / GPB/WRS Handling on Kerbs
July 04, 2016, 05:39:27 AM
Hi, everyone. I'm developing some content that I hope to add in for WRS/GPB, and I'm wondering if any of you have advice for it. Currently, and in the knowledge of KRP's kerbs, the handling is quite unstable on fully modeled kerbs. However, since karts have no suspension, it makes me wonder if the vehicles with suspension work in the same way. I have 3 types of kerbs that are commonly used on racing circuits. The first (far left) is what is found at circuits like Catalunya, Monza, etc. It's a saw-toothed kerb that recesses into the ground, rather than protruding. I have heard that these kerbs are preferred by real riders. The next two are what are seen at Abu Dhabi, the one in the middle being used as an exit kerb while the one on the far right is used on the inside edge. What are your opinions on these types of kerbs, and what  works best for the sims? The circuits are fantasy circuits, so the input is mostly to get an optimal design that is user-friendly. Also, if any of you have a type of kerb that works well, would you mind sharing the info?

Thanks!
