General Discussion / Re: World Racing Series beta12b

I was on the public server "open server #2" today with another fellow ("spatas"). Whenever I went to the track the game would crash. Totally reproducible. Hasn't been like this in beta11. Since it seems to be totally reproducable, maybe this can be fixed soon?

Quotenew: onboard engine sound
Can you please give a hint on how to make the onboard sounds work correct? I assume one needs to add different layers in the .scl? But I would like to know what restrictions those layers need to fulfill.

I used 'livery.tga' as that was what it was for the Moto 3 paint mods I did before. I will try using 'bike.tga' this time.

I do use the same name in the pack and save routines.
I might be mistaken, maybe livery.tga is the correct one. Just unpack another paint from the mod and you should know ;)

I have created a custom paint for the Kalex bike.

It shows up on the list of paints but it doesn't get applied to the bike. Anybody have any idea why?
That is mostly due to not obeying name restrictions. Make sure the name is of your paint file is "bike.tga" when being put into PaintEd. Then in PaintEd I think you have to make sure that the name of the .pnt file is the same when you hit "PACK" and when you save the file.

Btw, saved replays don't seem to load anymore. It always crashes to desktop when trying to load a saved replay.

What a let down after an entire year. An update that breaks all mods but offers no improvements. Are there any physics inprovements?

There are no physics improvements.
Is there anything different that could induce the feeling of changed physics? I have only tried the RX so far. And the handling seems to be different. The car is much more unstable under braking and has a bigger tendency to understeer. Did you change the tyres?

Yes, there is a change in the simulation of tyres on dirt.
Ok thank you. I might have to backpaddel on the stability under braking not so sure about that. But the tendency to understeer is def there.

On another note: there seems to be more dirt being flipped up by tyres. Looks realistic. Is that also due to the change in tyres or did you change anything substantially to how the dirt particles fly around?

new: support for dirt buildup on the car
Can you elaborate on how to enable dirt buildup on car? Do we need to create a texture file or is it enabled per default as in MXB?

Suggestions and wishlist / TV overlay - Standings
December 07, 2017, 07:47:43 AM
Please add a TV overlay:

  • General overlay diplayed for Pos 1-20 [display in left/top left of screen]

    • Training and Qualifying: Standings, Gap to best time
    • Race: Standings, Gap to leader, (Joker lap finished)
  • Dynamic overlay displaying split times of the driver being watched [display in middle of bottom of screen]

    • Training and Qualifying: accumulated sector time (of finished sectors of current lap), gap of accumulated current sector times compared to accumulated leader sector times of current lap
    • Race: current live gap compared to driver in position ahead (taking into account sector times of current lap)

It would add a lot of racing atmosphere and it would help to have all standings and lap time info available while watching other cars/drivers live. This would add a lot of added value to all your other sims too.

The spring-like effect doesn't look good at all, but it's not really a problem for the simulation, because it only happens when the tyre is sliding 90 degrees, out of control, so not during normal driving conditions.
Ok thank you for the explanation. Overall the simulation feels really really good (especially since beta11). Good to know it only affects the simulation in extreme conditions. I like how the RX behaves with RX tyres on dirt and tarmac, overall really believable. I also like how the slicks behave on dirt, also very believable. Overall it feels great.

2 final thoughts/remarks:

  • You state that it only happens when the tyre slides 90 degree laterally. Depending on the track, in RX it is not uncommon to have 90 degree sliding angles for short periods, especially on the rear tyres. So in effect, it does affect to simulation to some degree. The fascination about RX especially is the driving in extreme slides and still having control adn essentially making one faster.
  • So the underlying tyre simulation model does have some limitations. With your knowledge and expertise, why not adjust the tyre model in a way that it is suitable even for extreme driving conditions? I know you probably want to stick to the current raw tyre simulation, as it is accepted. But if the underlying simulation does not take extreme driving conditions into account, then please fill this gap. It would actually be a surplus. It could be reality-checked just by having the car/tyres behave like in real life. You would still stick to the normal tyre model in "normal" driving situations. It would essentially only effect RX and then only for extreme slides. But again, those situations are important for RX.

This is a known limitation of the tyre model when sliding 90 degrees laterally.
Ok. Just to make sure we talk about the same, I mean the weird "jumping" of the car before coming to a stand-still. Before the car comes to a stand-still, it moves back and forth even lateraly back to where it came from. Either way, is there a way of possibly fixing this? Does not look sim-like. Otherwise I am having a blast with the RX on Holjes.  :)

OT: Btw, Iracing unveiled its RX content, it does not get very good reviews. Might be a good point to showboat what you got ; ) Are there plans to include race format like this in the near future?

Would probably get some attention with your physics, especially since netcode seems to be greatly improved (judging from KRP and MXB).

Bug Reports / Suspension simulation bug
December 06, 2017, 06:20:02 PM
Dear Piboso, glad to see you are working on WRS. Really looking forward to the new beta. Would be really glad if you could adress the suspension simulation bug (it's in there for a long time now, happens for all cars) before releasing the next beta. Would gladly offer to test if there is need.

Here is a video of the bug, towards the end.

LOL. If there was a kid that would pull that off, it would be Jamoz' kid.
