Off Topic / Guevara joins Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3
November 06, 2013, 07:27:58 AM
Spain's Juanfran Guevara has signed with Mapfre Aspar Team Moto3 ahead of the Moto3™ World Championship season of 2014.

Guevara, now 18, made his World Championship debut with a pair of wildcard performances in 2012 and is this year competing full-time with CIP Moto3. He is now delighted to be joining Aspar to ride its Kalex-KTM next season, alongside Brazil's Eric Granado.

"The opportunity to join the Mapfre Aspar Team in just my second season at World Championship level is a massive step for my career," Guevara says. "It is a team with great history and incredible experience, so I am sure I can learn a lot. For me it was important to be back in a Spanish team, which will making everything easier for me. The objective is to continue to grow as a rider – it is only my second year and I have a long way to go, but I am sure that I can be fighting near the front."

"By signing Juanfran we are putting our backing behind a young Spanish rider with a lot of potential," adds team owner Jorge Martínez 'Aspar'. "He has a great opportunity ahead of him and I am sure he will make the most of it. The objective is to help him move forward with his career and to develop him as a rider. I am sure that he can fight in the top ten. The Kalex has moved on a lot as a machine since it was first created and it's a great bike now, so I am sure Juanfran can score top results."

Riding a TSR Honda this year, the best result to date for Guevara – who hails from Lorca in Murcia – is 16th position in the inaugural Grand Prix of the Americas.

Off Topic / Pol Espargaro: Moto2™ World Champion 2013
October 28, 2013, 08:27:33 AM
Pol Espargaro's 2013 success signals his first title win in the World Championship. The 22-year-old Spaniard becomes the fourth Moto2™ World Champion and the 107th different rider to win a title in the history of the World Championship.

The younger brother of MotoGP™ racer Aleix Espargaro made his World Championship debut as a wildcard in 2006, at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya situated barely ten minutes' drive from his Granollers home. From 27th on the grid, Pol would finish that 125 race in 13th position to become the youngest ever rider to score points in the World Championship, barely one week after his 15th birthday. Covering for the injured Andrea Iannone for the final six races, Espargaro impressed with sixth place in the Valencia season-closer. His first full season came in 2007, switching from Derbi to Aprilia equipment and achieving a first podium finish at Estoril as he finished only two tenths of a second behind winner Hector Faubel.

Espargaro switched back to a Derbi bike for his final three 125 seasons. In 2008 came a further three podium finishes plus his career-first pole position in Barcelona. He would finish fourth in the standings in 2009, then going one better to manage third overall as he missed the podium on only five occasions in 2010. Marc Marquez would win the title before both he and Espargaro jumped up to Moto2™ for 2011. Espargaro's first campaign in the intermediate category was with FTR machinery and would prove to be difficult, not scoring a podium until Indianapolis before following up with another top three result in Malaysia. He ended a somewhat low-key year 13th in the championship, switching to a Kalex for a title assault in 2012.

Remembered for the battle between Pol Espargaro and Marc Marquez, the 2012 Moto2™ World Championship would not be without its controversy. Espargaro would rack up no less than eight pole positions and four race victories, including Round 2 at Jerez which was red-flagged. The other three wins came at Silverstone, MotorLand Aragón and Phillip Island, with the Australian success being nothing short of dominant as he clinched victory by the massive margin of nearly 17 seconds. However, there was a contentious incident in Barcelona when Espargaro crashed following a chop from Marquez who was recovering from an incident of his own. He would eventually end the year as runner-up and 56 points in arrears of Marquez.

A favourite for the title in 2013, Espargaro started off as he meant to continue by winning in floodlit Qatar but only after an entertaining battle with Scott Redding. He would not retain the championship lead for long, crashing at the inaugural Grand Prix of the Americas two weeks later. A third place in Jerez was followed by a crash at Le Mans and fourth at Mugello, then celebrating back-to-back wins at Barcelona and Assen. The low point was eighth at Silverstone as title rival Redding romped away to a popular home victory, but victories at Misano and Phillip Island were more than welcome. The turning point was qualifying in Australia, when Redding crashed and fractured his left wrist which left the Englishman on the sidelines for a race.

Espargaro clinched the title at Motegi on 27th October, winning the Japanese Grand Prix after closest rivals Redding and Tito Rabat were involved in a first-lap multiple collision. In 2014, he will step up to MotoGP™ with Monster Yamaha Tech3 and is expected to be in contention for podium finishes as he partners Bradley Smith.

A few facts about Pol Espargaro:

- Espargaro becomes the sixth Spanish rider to win the intermediate class world title, joining: Sito Pons (1988 and 1989), Dani Pedrosa (2004 and 2005), Jorge Lorenzo (2006 and 2007), Toni Elias (2010) and Marc Marquez (2012)

- Espargaro has won the title by recovering from a 38-point deficit to Scott Redding following the 11th race of the year at Silverstone

- From the 16 Moto2™ races so far in 2013, Espargaro has had most pole positions (five), most podium finishes (ten) and most race wins (six)

Off Topic / Decision of the Grand Prix Commission
October 17, 2013, 12:51:44 PM
The Grand Prix Commission, composed of Messrs. Carmelo Ezpeleta (Dorna Sports, CEO), Ignacio Verneda (FIM Executive Director, Sport), Herve Poncharal (IRTA) and Takanao Tsubouchi (MSMA) in the presence of Javier Alonso (Dorna Sports) and Mike Trimby (IRTA, Secretary of the Meeting), in a meeting held on 12th October 2013 in Sepang (Malaysia), made the following decisions.

TECHNICAL REGULATIONS

Moto3™ Class – Effective 2014

- Engine manufacturers will be required to make available six gearboxes, comprised of two specifications, and to allow teams to decide at the first event

MotoGP™ Class – Effective 2014

- The temperature of fuel, which may not be less than 15 degree Celsius below the ambient temperature, will now be checked in a separate container prior to the fuel tank being filled. This is due to the shapes of some fuel tanks making it impossible for a probe to measure temperature in all sections of the fuel tank. The fuel tank must be empty prior to filling from the separate container.

- For practical and cost reasons, wildcard entries in the MotoGP™ class will be free to use any ECU and software.

- MotoGP™ class wildcard entries will be permitted to use a maximum of three engines at each event.

OTHER MATTERS

MotoGP™ Class Categories

It has already been announced that MotoGP™ class entries opting to use the Magneti Marelli ECU, but their own software, will be designated as competing under the "Factory" option. The 'CRT' designation which previously applied to the remaining entries is no longer relevant. In future, these entries will be referred to as 'Open'.

Off Topic / Aspar with Honda and Hayden for 2014-15
October 17, 2013, 12:28:03 PM
Power Electronics Aspar has revealed it will contest the 2014 and 2015 MotoGP™ seasons with 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden, while also announcing a new technical agreement to compete with Honda Production Racer machinery.

The Thursday announcement at Phillip Island marks the start of a new era for the Valencia-based team headed up by former racer Jorge Martinez 'Aspar', which will switch to the Honda bike from ART machinery. Hayden joins from Ducati Team, marking his first team move for five years, while his new teammate is yet to be announced. Both the Honda and Hayden deals have been confirmed for two seasons.

"It is great news for the Power Electronics Aspar Team to have the acquired services of Honda and a rider of the profile of Nicky Hayden," says team CEO Aspar. "We are taking a huge step forward in terms of quality, prestige and image. We have grown a lot in a short space of time and we are all very excited about this new project with Honda. It is the factory that the Aspar Team first started with back in 1992 and I have great memories of that period. Our objective is to continue being a reference point in the premier class.

"I think the combination of Honda's MotoGP™ Production Racer and Nicky Hayden is going to be a very successful one. We are thrilled to be working with a manufacturer with the history that Honda has and a rider like Nicky, a World Champion with huge experience. It will be a big change for us after so many years working with Italian factories, but we have high hopes for this new project. We are up for the challenge and we will give maximum effort to making sure the Power Electronics Aspar Team continues achieving top results."

In 2013, the outfit is running Aleix Espargaro and Randy de Puniet, with the Spaniard firmly on course to claim the overall honours for CRT runners for the second consecutive season. Using the spec Magneti Marelli ECU software in 2014, Aspar will be classed as an 'Open' team as opposed to a 'Factory' entry, according to the official labeling which was confirmed by the Grand Prix Commission on Thursday.

Off Topic / Ana Carrasco makes history at Sepang
October 15, 2013, 06:20:25 AM
Moto3™ rider Ana Carrasco wrote her way into the history books at Sepang on Sunday, becoming the first female rider in well over a decade to score a World Championship point.

Carrasco, 16 years of age and hailing from Murcia in south-eastern Spain, made her World Championship debut with Team Calvo at the start of this season, riding alongside Moto3™ title contender Maverick Viñales. Prior to Malaysia, Carrasco's best finishing position had been 17th at the Indianapolis Grand Prix in August.

At Sepang, Carrasco qualified 19th on the grid and collected the final point for 15th place as - in a dramatic fight to the finish line - she beat San Carlo Team Italia's Francesco Bagnaia by just over one tenth of a second. She becomes the first female rider to score points in the Moto3™ class, which was inaugurated in 2012.

"I think I had a very good race and I am very pleased," Carrasco commented. "I struggled a bit at the start, seeing many falls, so I preferred to take it easy.

"I then had a hard time making up positions, but with about six laps to go I was at the front of my group. I passed somebody at the end of the final lap to get my first World Championship point – I'm super happy! Now we have to keep working as hard as possible in order to pick up many more."

Carrasco's achievement makes her the first female rider to score a World Championship point since Germany's Katja Poensgen finished 14th in the 250 Italian Grand Prix of 2001, at Mugello. However, no female rider had scored in the lightweight class for some 18 years; the last was Tomoko Igata of Japan, who was seventh at Brno in the 125 Czech Grand Prix of 1995.

Off Topic / Abraham with Honda Production Racer in 2014
October 14, 2013, 06:25:43 AM
Cardion AB Motoracing and Karel Abraham will compete with a Honda Production Racer motorcycle for the 2014 MotoGP™ season.

This year, the Brno-based outfit is running with a CRT-specification ART, currently ridden by Luca Scassa following an operation for Abraham who was injured at Indianapolis. From 2014 onwards, it will become one of the first teams to compete with the new Honda Production Racer machinery.

"There are lots of fundamental new regulations in the 2014 MotoGP™ rules to compensate a handicap of production bikes, including ours, in comparison with factory bikes," says Team Manager Karel Abraham Sr.

"No-one can doubt that Honda is a leader in development of MotoGP™ bikes. I believe that we are getting very competitive machine based on the enormous racing experience of the Honda brand."

Rider Abraham, however, will be skipping the first pre-season test in Valencia:

"(My shoulder operation) means I will miss the Valencia test. Of course, it's not so important as the pre-season sessions at Sepang, but it's good to get familiar with the bike and to know how it reacts compared with the previous bike."

Off Topic / Marquez handed penalty point after Aragón
October 10, 2013, 07:22:03 AM
MotoGP™ World Championship leader Marc Marquez has been given one penalty point following his Aragón Grand Prix collision with teammate Dani Pedrosa. Furthermore, for its responsibility in Pedrosa's crash, Honda has been stripped of the Constructors' Championship points scored it scored as a result of Marquez's race victory.

Fighting for second place on the sixth lap of the race at MotorLand Aragón, Marquez made slight contact with Pedrosa when he overshot the breaking point at Turn 12. A touch from his left arm broke the rear wheel speed sensor cable on the back of Pedrosa's bike, resulting in a loss of his traction control for the latter which saw the him crashing out of the race.

With Marquez having gone on to claim victory from Yamaha Factory Racing's Jorge Lorenzo, it was confirmed after the Aragón race that the touch would be technically analysed by Race Direction on the Thursday ahead of the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. At 12 noon local time, both Marquez and Pedrosa plus representatives of Repsol Honda Team gathered with Race Direction at the Sepang International Circuit.

Following a meeting of just over half an hour, it was announced that Marquez had been handed one penalty point (not a championship point) for his part in the Aragón clash, while losing the Constructors' Championship points he scored for the MotorLand Aragón race. This decision takes his total of penalty points to three for the 2013 MotoGP™ season, having previously received two for ignoring yellow flags during Warm-Up for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

"Marc has been penalised with one point on his license," acknowledges Livio Suppo, Team Principal of Repsol Honda Team. "That means there is no consequence for this race (in Malaysia). Basically, they said that in this particular case it was more or less okay, but they are taking Marc's whole season into consideration and he has been close to touching the rider in front of him on more than one occasion. The message was basically, 'This time it was okay but realise that you have been doing this quite often'.

"With the other issue, Race Direction thinks that – and this is true, unfortunately – the crash was mainly due to the bike problem because of the broken cable and the backup system taking a bit too much time to kick in. So we have been penalised 25 points in the manufacturers' championship. Now we need to think about it and see whether we have to make an appeal or not. My feeling is that Nakamoto San (Shuhei Nakamoto, Executive Vice President of HRC) will understand the situation."

Detailing the traction control failure on Dani Pedrosa's bike was Takeo Yokoyama, the Technical Director of Repsol Honda Team, who also explained that added measures have been put into place from the Sepang round onwards:

"The problem was with both the hardware and the software. In terms of the hardware, the sensor cable was exposed too much and it was very easy – even with just small contact from others riders – to cut the cable. So we have now added protection to that cable for this race. From the software point of view, we of course do have a backup mode; if something happens with the sensor signal, the bike is supposed to go into the safety mode immediately. However, the strategy was not perfect, so for this race (in Malaysia) we have modified it so that we can detect such failures earlier."

Microsoft has hatched a plan to get resellers to help wean customers off Windows XP by April 2014. Windows XP currently holds the second largest percentage of the computer operating system market right below Windows 7. According to Net Applications, Windows XP holds 37.17% of the operating system market while Windows 7 holds 44.37%.

Microsoft is reminding resellers and customers that there is less than a year left until all support for Windows XP is stopped. On April 8, 2014, Windows XP will no longer receive patches or updates including critical security updates. Moving consumers from Windows XP to a newer version of Windows is reportedly one of Microsoft's top priorities for its fiscal 2014,

That could be a tall order for Microsoft since the software giant and its partners would reportedly need to migrate 586,000 computers per day over the next 273 days to eliminate all machines running Windows XP.

Microsoft is rolling out several programs, offers, and tools to encourage users to leave Windows XP behind. Those programs include Accelerate where Microsoft will pay some reseller and integrator partners to create a proof of concept Metro-style apps to help lure customers to Windows 8. Microsoft is also going to extend the program call Get to Modern aimed at small and medium businesses.

It was reported earlier this month that Windows 8 market share just finally crept ahead of the unloved Windows Vista operating system.
