I have been using the default 125 in on board (first person) view and noticed that the riders hands float above the bars probably by about a scale 50mm.

Tracks / Donnington (national) - great track
June 28, 2015, 10:41:17 AM
Downloaded this and i have to say - what a great track!

Without the stupid extension section the whole track just flows fast and beautifully in GPB. Much better than i remember it from GP500.

First one i have found with a really nice balance of grip on the rumble/kerbs, you can take liberties with the grip but not too much.

All the turns are great no problems on inclined entries  :) Really repeatable cornering

and... most of all I love the bumpiness/ripples on this track, just right in first person to get the bike moving a bit and give a feel for being close to the limits. Actually feels like it might be worth trying to adjust the suspension settings and see if it reflects in game.

Any suggestions for more tracks like this?

Is it possible for the owners club to organize an 'orange jersey' GPB novice training event occasionally?

Some recent discussions have made me come to the conclusion that people would maybe build their confidence learning GPB better and quicker if they could witness and follow other bikes and riders successfully completing areas of track that they are convinced are near impossible early in their involvement with GPB.

What i mean by an 'orange vest' is an event where nobody will be upset if they get speared off the track or someone topples over on the entry to the corner as they are doing their best ever flying lap or whilst practicing setups for a race event. It will be carnage on track but this can seem a frustrating sim when you start out and something to boost confidence is needed to encourage new owners to 'stay the course'.

I think some may be put off joining a general session because they do not want to cause problems for others on track whilst still in the constantly toppling over stage of learning.

Maybe run a poll and once you get a few 'learners' and a couple of more experienced guys who can act as 'pacing' riders just run a short session.

Custom hardware / Paddle shifter!
June 22, 2015, 11:13:00 PM
Pursued the discussion from the other thread and had a go at building a decent prototype aluminum paddle shift for for my gamepad and it has worked out quite well.

Had a couple of small flanged bearings to hand so i added them to a brass spindle - the rocker is very smooth with a nice light action. The paddle can be swapped out without upsetting the switch 'press' as it has a small actuator board below the paddle arm :) Tactile switches are below the paddle on a small piece of veroboard and connect in via my Bodnar USB board. Super slick and swift shifting, just a hint of travel and then the tactile click.  8)

A quick couple of laps (just holding it in place with finger tips at the moment as i cannot find any sticky pads or Velcro around the house ) and its great, trigger fingers are back on triggers and pad grip is more comfortable.

Great little fun project   ;D

Custom hardware / 3D Vision?
June 22, 2015, 09:11:49 AM
Has anyone tried Nvidia 3D vision 1 or 2 with GPB?, was it worth bothering with? Does it even work or is is just a directX thing?

Now I have a high refresh monitor i could run the 3D vision (glasses) system, just wondered if anybody had any experience with it.

Thanks

When the rider gets tucked in behind the fairing bubble would it be possible for the wind noise to step down in volume, when he pops back up it could step back to normal volume? The engine intake noise should be prominent when he's tucked but i am not sure if this is modeled in a way that can do this. I think this would feel more realistic than the present arrangement of wind noise just being proportional to speed.

Currently using headphones a lot and noticing that i do not seem to have any reverberation when passing buildings etc, on the mountain track tunnels you would expect to hear a big change. I though it was supported or is this a track mod thing?

Also noticing that he seems to have his head a long way back when 'tucked' (50's cafe racer style) as if he has slid right back onto the tail hump, you would expect his head to be a bit closer to the bars and screen when leaned forward over the tank and not looking from halfway down the tank.  Its almost as if the viewpoint has gone down and back rather than down and forward. Can this be modified? - Using auto rider lean btw

Thanks

Thank you MaX  :-*

After concluding my old copy 360 controller (other thread) had awful although normal for 360 controller tapers for the triggers MaX convinced me into upgrading to  the Thrustmaster GPX.

Its arrived! New Gamepad Day  ;)

Bought the Ferrari Lightback one for less than 30 quid. It is quite cool  8)  (i think so anyway  ;D )

As reported on the web i had to force the 360 driver as it did not auto detect with Win7 as 360 compatible, very weird for a licensed controller, but no big problem really.

First lap, game set up as before and breezed around spa with no drama and 'ideal time' on first lap  :) normally i would be down once or twice a lap.

The difference with the throttle trigger - no rear wheel spin outs - progressive  :)

The difference with the brake trigger - no more lock up - progressive  :)

You can see as soon as you calibrate that the triggers are linear over the full range of travel - brilliant feel now, horribly sudden before with a massive step in output.  :)

Direction stick is spot on - bike moves with the stick, no dead zone in the controller side.  :)

The big difference is that this is made for driving games (steer/throttle/brake), the 360 one is tweaked primarily for first person shooters (run/dash/gun trigger)

More generally
.Much more comfortable to hold - the 'horns' are a bit longer and the underside of the ferrari one has a soft rubber coating
.Looks kinda nice
.Trigger springs are quite a bit stiffer, seems better for me at the moment
.Build quality seems pretty good and the graphics are nicely applied and seem to be lacquered over
.Quality switches - very nice positive action

The lights are a bit pointless, Stick ones only work with force feedback signal (so nothing in GPB) and the trigger ones just reflect trigger position  ??? Be nice to MOD it to a shift light  ::)

A change of controller, and i think more importantly the way the controls outputs behave has made GPB fun, i cannot believe how much frustration my old controller was unknowingly causing.

All the mysterious low speed drops on corners were down to the game engine reacting badly to the controller output. I finally feel like i have some control over the bike, the harsh braking signal caused the front to overload and the slightly wayward steering seems due to the hardware dead zone.

It should be in the guide - you need a good controller for this game or it can be infuriating! Look carefully at how the controls physical position relates to the game values on the config screen, it might be quite revealing.

It might be nice to note which controllers have good/bad output curves.
I will start, cheap 360 replacement controller - No good for this sim!

Joy! Finally getting somewhere.  ;D

Noticed my 360 pad triggers have a lot of travel before either the throttle or brakes register movement in game. Has anyone tried any mods to improve this?

Seem to calibrate OK, just a lot of travel before they generate a signal.

With the head tracking tests sparking my interest and noting tomorrow will be the big OC Rift announcement i thought i would have a quick peek at the expected specs and costs for Rift.

Bit shocked, needs a GTX 970 class GPU (£300) due to the high overhead of VR and the latest version of HDMI. So no laptops or compact PC's  :(
Maybe the Rift should have more of the processing built in or offered as stand alone processor.

Think i will have to wait for a more main steam option to be offered in the future  :(

Custom hardware / Gear shift patterns
June 07, 2015, 09:17:58 PM
Thinking about foot operated gear shift - is it possible to have a 'classic' gear shift pattern?

i.e. 1 up / 5 down or 1 down / 5 up rather than sequential shift

The reason for my question....  Footshift mk1  ;) Toggle switch operates quite nicely but needs more 'clunk' from some sort of mechanical indexer.  :D

231
Seem to notice this a lot with low speed turns; the rider will just fall off the bike, nothing dramatic has occurred and the bike will often just roll on in the upright position.

It just like the rider has given up, let go of the bars and tipped of the bike - any idea what is happening?

EDTracker - a simple low cost device that performs head tracking in 3DOF without the need for cameras.
https://edtracker.org.uk/
EdTracker - natively emulates a standard HID joystick device.

Could you possibly add support for analogue joystick axis to be used for Freelook/headlook  in the options ?

Workarounds using 3rd party software to emulate a freetrack device appear to have been complicated by the emergence of a second, and it would appear incompatible freetrack protocol  (FaceTrackNoIR).

Thank you.

Could it be made so that when the bike is stationary and the auto gearbox/clutch assist is ON (gamepad mode  ::) ) that the virtual rider selects and engages first gear at lower RPM or feeds in the clutch more gently. Dumping the clutch in first at 12000rpm on a 1000cc machine makes pulling away a pain.

Just something that might help people new to the game get started a bit quicker as well :)

Just had my offer of free win10 upgrade. Apparently it will download on release (3GB) and then wait to be installed at a time of my choosing  :) Wonder how much of my apps and software will be compatible though  ::)

Support / Freetrack? for PiBoSo
June 01, 2015, 04:45:16 PM
Could you explain what the option settings in the game are for, and is the game compliant with the currently supported FreeTrack2.0 client .dll ? Details below;

Thank you

Support / Adjusting rider position - possible?
May 31, 2015, 06:24:23 PM
I have the ride lean forward backward on auto, but the rider never seems to tuck in and rides along in a sort of upright casual road riding position even at speed/cornering. I would like the rider to stay in a more typical race tucked in position - is it possible to adjust his behavior? I tried setting lean forward to a manual button but the stance is still very upright  :(

Found this and thought it might be interesting to those using infra-red based tracking. The pre-built at £40 seems a good deal, buying bit locally looks like it would be about £60.
Compatible with free track so should work OK in GPB.
No more camera probs, processor overhead or LED viewing angle issues :-), might even try this myself...

Had a quick look around and the 2 boards for home building can be had for less than £20 if you shop about  8)

It has struck me as odd that as we are all beta code testers the running games do not seem to output any debug info after a core.exe crash. I guess core.exe errors are just untrapped code bugs or due to unexpected events occurring outside the GPB engine (network probs). It is usual to log these to find the patterns that caused them and resolve the code problems.

Is it possible to generate a circular buffer type debug stream (say the last minute) that the developers might use to resolve some of the issues. An event like the owner club race seems ideal as a tool to track down the problems.

Mods / Possible MODS wiki or blog or gallery?
May 24, 2015, 10:38:13 AM
With so many mods in development does anyone think it would be possible to have them listed with relevant images, user comments and compatibility (GPB version) so that you could browse through?

If it could be supported by registered forum users (wiki style) editing and maintaining it might not be too once the framework was complete.

I know its a big ask and would need some one who knows how to do 'web stuff' but i do feel a bit lost  trying to decide whats worth adding in and i can only see it getting ever more confusing.

The bike MOD is great but it would be nice to know a bit more info on each individual MOD in the package.

Custom hardware / Maximum steer angle?
February 22, 2015, 05:39:08 PM
Does anyone know if the maximum steer angle (lock to lock) is fixed in GPB and if so what is the value?

Does 90 degrees seem a realistic value (+-45) to still allow maneuvering using the low speed controls (feet)?

Thanks.
