Custom hardware / Hall effect pots
February 01, 2015, 04:43:19 PM
These look useful, long life with much improved relaibilty and works just like a normal pot. Added bonus is a range of swept angles 35 to 360 continuous so no need for any gearing to maintain resolution. Definite upgrade item if the rest of my rig works out. Tad pricey though £10 to £15 for one offs :(

Custom hardware / Engine vibration simulation
January 26, 2015, 09:43:43 PM
Remembered i had one of those old 3 legged massagers lying around, its only powered by 3 AAA batteries so i'm guessing the vibration motor is the same low powered one as the ones found in rumble controllers.

Quite surprised that placing it against the yoke of my bar controller produces levels of vibration at the grips that would certainly be a good indication of engine rpm as discussed in the throttle intensity thread. The simple eccentric mass method should in this application be a reasonable approximation of vibration generated by rotating engine components with respect to amplitudes relative to rotational frequency - fixed mass variable frequency.

This could be an interesting mod for the feedback channels of standard pads if you could send rpm as the FF signal and certainly seems like a simple mod for custom controllers.

I was thinking i would need a fairly powerful motor and large eccentric weight but i think i may be overestimating the forces required (by about a factor of 10  ::).

Custom hardware / Steering rig start
January 24, 2015, 11:29:48 AM
Started building so i thought i would start a thread. Got most of the bar bits together and the main steer axis. Yoke is Aprilla RS. Aluminium box section is temporary for now.

ended up making a switch housing from alloy billet, all done on the drill press.

Throttle pulley and potentiometer are hidden in the fork stanchion clamp with fake fork tops from aluminium.

The steering spindle should allow for drive pulleys and strain gauges to hopefully develop torque steer and force feedback. After a recent discussion thread i am thinking of adding a engine rpm linked vibration motor in the space that used to house the steering lock as this could be quite straight forward to do and i already have the electrical signals as they are the same as the ones that drive my rev counter.

I was hoping to put off the horizontal roll axis spindle for a while as it will need a bit of machining for the raked 'gimbal' attachment but i now see that i need to get on with this bit next.

Got most of the hydraulic bits but need to make some adapters before i can assemble, hydraulic connections seem to have no real standards with a vast mix of thread diameters and pitches >:(

Just a start... lots to do :)

Just to add, really pleased with how nice this 'feels' already. The mass of the bars with a smooth turning action just feel so right :)

Custom hardware / Cheap bar mounted switches
January 05, 2015, 11:23:04 PM

Found these cheap £7.50 the pair and decided to give them a try, green button (was horn) was already momentary push button, red one (was lights) can be modified from latching on/off to momentary  - took about 20 minutes to pop back off switch off and cut the spring toggle out. Can be mounted top/bottom - left/right. Original white function captions came off easily with cotton bud and isopopyl

Hopefully will be useable for gear up/down on the lower set, some other functions on top

Not sure what to do with the slide switch which is ON-OFF-ON (was indicators), could possibly replace with mini push buttons or micro-switch rocker, might use as a 'remap' using the diode grid trick.

Seems reasonably made with integral aluminum clamp to lock onto bars.

It would be nice to move all the discussions on motion simulators, controllers and other peripheral devices to their own category for easy reference and to make it easier to follow the various projects.

Just discovered i can see BBC Ireland progson iplayer and Road documentary Dunlops/irish road racing is up to view for a bit - finally some xmas tele worth watching

Plugins / GPbikes telemetry and RVF instruments
December 26, 2014, 10:44:56 AM

This is GPBikes telemetry streaming to a USB microcontroller and driving a genuine honda tacho and temp gauge all USB bus powered, also added gear position indication, shift, limiter and engine management indicators.

The needle gauge is just testing the steering torque output analogue conversion circuit  ;)

Trying the youtube thing for first time :-\

When riding in either of the first person views is it possible for the view to stay with the rider when he falls off, it seems odd for the view to switch to bike chase when you have been 'on bike' riding.

He should tumble and then look towards the bike crash site as i'm sure a few of us have in the past at sometime ;D
usual sequence of events ... big crash (weird slow motion thing)... oh no look at the bike, what have i done to it..., ouch, do you think that might be broken.... ;)

Physics / Bike cooling water temperature
December 07, 2014, 03:58:11 PM
Noticed with the default 125cc bike that they are always very low <60 C, is this normal or a bug? I expected them to be around 100C

Physics / Cooling water temp is always low?
December 07, 2014, 01:50:20 PM
What would a reasonable cooling water temperature be? I've been messing with my external dash instruments and noticed that with the default 125cc bike the temps are always very low (<60 C). If i pull the clutch and rev the bike for ages i can force it up to 100 C but as soon as you start moving it cools really fast. Always though a reasonable running temp was around 90-100 C for a road bike, most thermostats open around 85 C.

Is this a bug or do race bikes somehow run really cool?

Thanks..

Bikes / On bike view models
November 23, 2014, 01:49:14 AM
Hello, are the on bike models a separate model from the bike (as in gp500) or are they just a view of the main bike model?

Thanks

Plugins / Plugin dll complied in c#?
November 19, 2014, 10:36:09 PM
I'm thinking of creating my own plugin to stream data (revs/temp maybe timing data) via USB to a PIC microcontroller. I have source code for the PC end of the USB device but its C# based, does anyone know if GPB will have any issues communicating with this dll?

I just fancy the idea of having an old school tacho/temp gauge (maybe NC30/35) sat in front of my monitor simpit style, more of a novelty really as i like projects involving soldering irons and bits of wire :) The PIC end seems straight forward using PWM to generate a typical real life pulse from the data.

Thanks

Support / Adding mod bikes - help
November 19, 2014, 08:52:10 PM
Trying to add first bike (GSVR) to newly registered version of the game  (latest download), directory structure looks right but the bike does not show in the choose bike screen although the extra registered PiBoso bikes do. Should the extra bike be listed on the MODS screen?
I seem to be able to add a track OK. Tried clean install but it is still the same.

What am i missing?

Thanks
