My mother adopted that approach a few years ago with our ageing oven in France. Come Christmas day morning that year (she is English not French who bizarrely eat their Christmas "lunch" on Christmas Eve night and stuff prunes up the Turkey's bottom) the oven played up and she had to use the grill to cook the Turkey. It was edible but a bit crispy on the outside and "moist" on the inside plus she had to turn the poor thing upside down to cook it!

So be warned Bob!

I bet PiBoSo has never eaten a Turkey cooked by his wife that way..

grT   :)

I dare to say that no criticism to the french cusine can come from anybody from the UK.

I mean, here in the UK I've seen a brand of pies that goes under the very promising name of Pukka Pies (ouch!) and an entire line of frozen food named Gastro ...

I grew up in France Max and whilst I do greatly enjoy French cuisine the quality of food in your average French restaurant is not what it used to be. Many of the Auberges are now fast food pizza joints. No offence to the venerable Pizza intended.. It's a symptom of the modern age I think.

Also where are all the good quality Curry Houses in France? In that respect Glasgow is by comparison a "hot house" of culinary delights!

What amazed me about France was how many of the French flocked to McDonald's..mind you in France you can buy and drink lager beers in McDonald's so maybe that takes the mind off the plastic burgers you are eating?

No offence intended to any Americans who may be listening..

grT  ;)

P.S. Steak and Kidney pudding is nice!

1. Pizza is fantastic. If I had to chose one single dish I have to eat twice a day from here on, I'd chose pizza no doubt. You can quickly get bored by Foie Gras after a while. The problem with pizza is that it's damn hard to find a good one (even in Italy).

2. I can find a very decent restaurant from any given point in France (mainland + corsica) in a 10Km radius. For the UK, you have to make that 100Km. And cross fingers.

3. Curry ? Seriously ? Is that a disease you have or what ? You fell in a large curry filled pan when 6 months old (Asterix style) ?

4. McDonald (and Quick and similar) are disgusting. But I can point you to real good places for a burger as it was originally meant to be. Got one in Cannes where the meat is sliced right before cooking the burger. I kinda know the owner. Bit expensive for a burger, but ...

5. Your PS confirms my point :)

You have more chances to win me over direct steer OFF than convincing me that the UK has a half decent culinary tradition. I mean, you have 1 cheese declined into 25 nearly identical variants, and that's all. I think in Europe (even if you don't like to be thought as part of it), the only place where you can eat worse than the UK is Switzerland (where on top of having extra bad food, it costs a damn fortune). But at least if you're in switzerland (which by the way have at least excellent cheese), you're only a short trip away from Italy of France :)

P.S.
Man, 20 days to survive here ... today 14 degrees and heavy rain ... it's supposed to be almost summer in this hemisphere right now but ...

Been there, done that. Definitely not good. You may be right indeed, holland could be on par with the UK.

P.S.
I'll pass by holland on my way back.

I dare you to come eat in Holland...

I have been to Holland many times. I used to travel up there regularly from Normandie with an older friend to collect flowers and bulbs for their gardening business. I really enjoyed Amsterdam. Visiting Anne Frank's house (or hideaway) was very moving..

What I also really enjoyed was Indonesian cuisine. I thought it was top-notch to be honest. In a decent restaurant. Or home cooked.

I have a spicy tooth Max. My grandfather spent many years in India after the second world war. He grew to love curry in all its manifestations. He became addicted to it.

My father was the same and so is my mother. And my mother is a real "foodie" I can assure you. Everything is cooked from scratch. Even steak and kidney puddings.  ;)

If I'm honest while I enjoy French, Italian and Spanish food hugely it's just not spicy enough for me. As much as I love it. I also enjoy African and Jamaican cuisine because of the spice. British or English food can be wonderful also. But you won't find it like that in many pubs or restaurants. Hardly any at all from my experience. It has to be home cooked in the traditional manner by someone who knows what they're doing. My mother uses quite a few Victorian recipes that are quite interesting.. Also despite being French for me the best traditional fully mature cheddar cheese beats the best comte any day of the week. We used to really miss good quality cheddar cheese when living in France. My father came back with a box of the best cheddar cheese from specialist U.K. suppliers whenever he visited England. Yes we were that mad for cheddar!  ;D

Max, everyone to their own I guess. A properly and traditionally prepared frutti di mare pizza takes a lot of beating. I had one in Sienna once which was just wonderful.. Hang on you will soon be back in the sun Max! With some wonderful French food.  ;)

Anyway, what has this got to do with the xbox one controller for goodness' sake and who was the idiot who changed the subject?  ;)

I raced round the IOM TT track on the gp500 pc game against a friend online today and the xbox one controller was brilliant on gp500 also! Xpadder works perfectly with it also..

I like this controller very much indeed!

Personal preferece. I actually like vintage cheddar, but comte is another league for me. Anyway, even so, in France you can have a best Comte on monday, a best Roquefort on tuesday, a best Morbier on wednesday, a best Saint-Nectaire on thursday, a best Pont-l'Eveque on friday, a best Maroilles (extra smelly) on saturday and I've plenty left for sunday. Here I'm on a cheddar only diet.
