How are virtual rider gains tuned ?

@Piboso: how do you usually proceed for the tuning of the virtual rider gains ?

Are you using some sort of "advanced" tools (e.g. linearised model at various speeds + root locus to check the closed loop poles) ?
Or is it something just like "take the existing gains and tweak them by trial/error" ?
