Dont really know alot about computers, a while back I gave my mate some money to piece together a pc mainly for gaming.. He came back with this..

AMD 6 core cpu black series. 3.6 overclocked at 4.2 (whatever that means? Lol)
16G ram.
500G hdd
Nvidea GTX460 gpu.

Its fine for gpbikes and other games but some games like assetto corsa, rfactor 2, arma3 etc, I have to use low settings! But its still twitchy with low fps..

What do I need to upgrade to run any game easily with the best graphics/fps?

Just the graphics card??

ChadZX10R

They arent too bad specs, sure it could be better but the first thing I'd try is upgrading the graphics card because its a little old, you should be able to run games on at least normal settings then.

Bear in mind though that arma 3 is quite a demanding game so any mid range graphics card probably wont play on max settings. All depends on how much your into gaming, if you like to play a lot then its worth spending that bit extra on a decent graphics card. :)

Since 2010 (and I'm being generous), a PC without an SSD in 2014 is just a bug fat "NO THANKS".
Prices for a 128GB one are just ridiculous: a curcial mx100 128gb is 52GBP on amazon.co.uk (and the 256gb is 76GBP).
Slam windows 7 64 on it and you're good for a while.

A gtx460 is very very light for most games (but OK for GPB).

If you invest on it, I'd stick to nvidia if you plan to keep on playing GPB: my last 3 GPUs were AMD and I'm just tired of their stupid drivers with bad openGL support.

For general advice on what's worth buying at the moment, stick to http://www.tomshardware.com/
They have a "best picks" section (CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, SSDs ans screens) pretty "no-nonsense" (compared to other sites).
Just be careful on the GPU: they recommend a lot of AMD, but if you do care about openGL for GPB, you may wanto to go green.

Last point: AMD CPU for desktop ? Nah ... But for gaming it's not a big deal.

What's your budget? That's kind of the most important thing here.

teeds

You do not need any more RAM for sure. The bottle neck has to be the video card and the HDD will only slow the game loading not the FPS once you're playing.
Maybe get something as far up this list as your budget allows -

Hopefully your PSU is man enough...

Hi m8

As teeds just pointed out, your PSU will decide the components you can run. In a good gaming rig its best to have 1000W PSU and concentrate on a good graphics card. I stick with ASUS but EVGA are good for graphic card specs too. Keep it Nvidea for the best quality and driver support. The GTX series is best on the market and some good deals can be found. 3GB DDR5 is to be honest needed by most games these days. I run an ASUS G75 with 4GB DDR5 but only on a 670M and run most games in Ultra. If your building a tower go for the GTX900 series or at least the 800 series as newer games will need the clock speeds. Check the GPU clock speeds on graphics cards as if the speed is low the ram wont make it faster in many ways. ASUS have IMHO the best quality out there and great support and drivers.

http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/ROG_Series_Products/

Your Working ram is good for the amount but check the speed of the memory too, big difference in performance on these.

Keeping your CPU and GPU are a main factor too, if they get too hot they will not perform correctly and even be unstable. You can get a good sealed ready to install water cooling unit for CPU pretty cheap these days and it helps big time.

As for the HDD it should be a 7200 and really for the future 1TB is gonna fill up pretty quick. I have 1TB internal plus a 1TB and 2TB external and am down to 2GB between them free. Only 500GB of that is movies the rest is gaming and design. Thats 8 months since a fresh install too!!!

Just be careful bying things, just because it has a high number like a 760 wont mean its fast. A 670 from another manufacturer will kick the 760 ass because of clock speed and chipset components.

Hope that helps a bit, please ask if you need more help. Ive been building PC's since the 286 and 386 came out. Im old lol

1000W is total overkill in almost all the cases! Even if you plan to run crossfire or sli (which is anyway a bad idea).

For single GPU configs, 750W is more than enough (500-600W are very fine too).

sorry MAX I just look at the future of hardware and believe in spending money that will last a while lol. 1000W might be a bit overkill today but in a year it will be just good. I use a lot of components that have a higher wattage use for cooling purposes. Many people dont consider the cooling enough and it will effect the running and life of components(all money) lol. I also think a lot about the graphic card needs and these are growing quickly. so getting a 600 is okay now but if you decide in a year to upgrade and find the PSU cant take it its more money where as a 1000 now is not much more than a 600 but cheaper in the long run and ready for upgrading.

Just tyring to give options to save for the future

Obelix90

Hi,
I think newer graphic cards are more efficient.
Just compare the GTX770 and GTX970. 35% Lower TDP -> http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-970-vs-GeForce-GTX-770
A good way to calculate the PSU you need, is this site: http://www.enermax.outervision.com/

HornetMaX

Just as Obelix90 said: efficiency of components improves year over year. I have a 7950 which is more efficient than my previous 6850 which was itself more efficient than my previous 4850.
Same applies to CPUs.

1000W is overkill for BOBR6 (and for 99% of the people): his current config could probably run on 350W ...

If you really want to invest money on the PSU, go for quality: better a good quality 600W psu than a poor quality 1000W one.

MaX.

i have a 650w psu.. was a free upgrade! so if i went for gtx700 series and maybe a ssd? would that be ok?

at the moment im on gpbikes more than anything else  :P so im not looking to spend a fortune but i would like a modest upgrade for sure..

appreciate all the advice fellas nice one!!  ;)

teeds

Just try your current PSU but if you start getting lockups during game play then upgrade it. An SSD will use slightly less power than a spinnny drive but you'll probably want to run the original HDD too, so no help there.

HornetMaX

With a 750w psu I run for moe than a year an i5-2500 @ 4.5GHz with a crossfir eof 6850 (these too fairly overclocked).

With your 650w psu you'll have no issues at all (unless it's a crappy psu) for a gtx7xx.

And buy that ssd, it's a life changer.

MaX.

BOBR6 84

Yeah my psu was a free upgrade from overclockers uk! (where I bought from) so the brand makes a difference? Its called ''something flower'' I think? Leader x gold.. Something like that..

So it doesnt sound too expensive to turn what I have into something half descent! Cool, good news!  :P
