Wings, winglets, arerofoils, strakes or what ever you call them, they have been around for ages... Found some classics in this article (unfortunately I don't know Spanish). The most outrageous one ever must be the Aerofoil Viko TZ750A. Looks like an older F1 on 2 wheels.

Interesting article David. I had a think but I certainly don't remember seeing any of these designs back in the day. I guess when you can't squeeze any more out of the engine its time to maximise the aero for downforce gains, and its been the same idea for decades.

Read something on this the other day, apparently having a 'dustbin' type fairing pushes the 'centre of pressure' well forward of the C of G and has a rather unfortunate effect on the handling at higher speeds. This is why they were banned from racing.

Anyway, I wonder why they haven't put the wings on the front mudguard instead of the fairing.
Shouldn't it be better to have the downforce directly go to the wheel without travelling through the suspension first?

Sounds like a bad idea: if the wheel is kept on the ground but the bike's body still lifts/tilts, the attitude is not optimal.

Could be for other reasons though: maybe the airflow is more favourable on the sides of the fairing.
Or maybe you're simply not allowed to put wings there.

Probably because the wheel turns. I think the downforce from the wings will affect the handling in different ways depending on where the wheel is pointing in a given moment. Also it is harder to make the winglets secure, much less of a base for a safe attachment. And it is closer to the ground which might be a problem when the bike is leaning over. But I'm just speculating here.
