If one can afford to skip a lot of non-sense, some of the comments below the article are quite interesting.

lol, well why would I waste my time debating with you about it. I already mentioned to you that OpenGL and Gabe Newell is a game changer in another thread not but a few days ago.

I'm all for AMD and OpenGL. (underdogs to the mass appeal madness I suppose?)

I could give 2 $hits about apple, and don't see any point in wasting money on intel to flex benchmarks. I think of it as it was back in the day when PC gaming was underground. That vibe still exists among indie developers and open source.  Microsoft has DirectX and that is it, in terms of gaming.

Besides its a direct reflection of the forum we are on at the moment, a forum of an indie developer designing a simulator that is in OpenGL. You can always go play MotoGP 14 on PC in DirectX or on Xbox360.

In fact I would rather Linux/OpenGL etc stay somewhat underground so it doesn't become ruined by crappy software heaved out year after year, like COD.

Go easy on me Max, I'm just an elitist jerk with an factual opinion  ;D

What amazes me is that you seem to think that GPB would be worse if it was on DirectX ... or maybe that the mere act of going DirectX would change the values Piboso stands for.

Again, you can be an indie dev and use DirectX: there's zero conflict in that. DirectX (and openGL) are means. They're not a religion.

AMD and openGL ? Good luck. I've been with AMD (for the GPU) since I restarted playing on a PC (4850 -> 6850 -> 6850 xf -> 7950): have to say I'm far from impressed about how they handle openGL ... if Nvidia wasn't annoying the entire world with their proprietary G-sync stuff, I'd already be on their side. [BTW, G-sync and Free-Sync, these are game changers].

OpenGl and Newell a game changer ? I hope so. If that's true, it will be good for all of us. Problem is, at the moment is just a tiny ant facing a freakin' himalayan mountain ...

P.S.
I still (albeit occasionally) play cod4: the one and only cod that matters. After cod4, the rest is utter crap. But hey, cod4 is directX just like the 5, 6, 7 and whatever number we're on right now. It's not directx that made codN go crap (or any other game).

Things are warming up: http://www.anandtech.com/show/8962/the-directx-12-performance-preview-amd-nvidia-star-swarm

Very interesting read: shows the benefits of the new "low-level" APIs (like Mantle, DirectX 12 and openGL Next).

Realistly, how dificult would it be to switch??

Pretty difficult I'd guess. Notice however it will be the same difficulty (or close to) switching from the currently used openGL (2 IIRC) to DirectX12 or to openGL Next.

IIRC, Piboso also said that the biggest problem for them was not to cut out people on old graphics cards (not supporting Dx12 or openGL next).

Notice also that Dx12 will be Windows 10 only (no backport to Win 7 / 8 / 8.1, for technical reasons).
Likely, AMD and Nvidia will do the same: Dx12 and openGL next will only be available on their recent cards: for AMD only from GCN 1.0 on (HD7000 / R200) , Nvidia  from Fermi on (GTX 400/500).
If you have anything older than that and GPB moves to Dx12, you won't be able to play GPB.
Same for openGL next (but I don't know yet fropm which cards AMD/NVidia will support it).

On the bright side, if the gains are significant and if Intel decides to make their integrated GPU Dx12/openGL next ready, you may be able to play GPB on an integrated GPU (it's already the case, for HD3000, but at lower res and details).

Bottom line, it's way to early to plan switching to Dx12 or openGL next, but it's probably worth keeping an eye on all this.
