I would like to create separate displays for gear position and lap time

It is not possible, unlike WRS.
Support will be added in Beta9.

It is already supported.
"brakelights" under the "chassis" section of the gfx file.

Looks very cool in game but only seems to work for front brake, rear brake does not activate the lights
